Super User David P Posted October 9, 2007 Super User Posted October 9, 2007 Looking at another Dobyns rod possibly. Maybe a powell. Or taking other suggestions as well. Spinning or Casting is fine. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 The St. Croix TBS69MLXF would make for a fine dropshot rod. You might be able to find one clearenced out somewhere at a great price. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 Shimano Crucial is a fine rod for DSing. They make both casting and spinning versions and have an exposed notch in the foregrip. Also, ReelMech has some beauties for sale right now if you want to go the custom route. Quote

I would have to agree with fishtank...that is the rod I use for dropshot..love it...and they should be on clearence to make way for the "new" ones like he said..... Quote
Super User islandbass Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 Awesome rod makers with perhaps one of the most underrated rods, but look at the Lamiglas Certified Pro Line. They have two Drop Shot rods. My model is the XPS 702. http://www.lamiglas.com/prod_indiv.php?groupid=17 Just to let you know that no store I know sells their rods at MSRP, unlike loomis rods, vendors can sell them for less. As an example the $112 Competitor Rods usually sell for about $65 This rod's sensitivity (my Drop Shot Special) is astounding. Since you like Dobyns rods, I think you might love a Lami in your arsenal. I don't work for them, but I wish I did! Quote

Both say they're medium light...?? Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 Two and a half years ago I bought a BPS Bionic Blade spinning rod for $79. (as I recollect?) one piece, 6'6" in ML action. Fine tip action and plenty of backbone for this technique. Has served me well and has boated hundreds of smallmouth. I use it several times a week fishing a deep, clear hilland reservoir here in MA. I'm not really interested in brand names per se; I want a rod that feels and performs well in my hands. This rod meets that criteria nicely, IMO. Quote
Ghetto_Basser Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I'm getting my first G blank in 2 days I will let you know. Quote

Super User islandbass Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 The 702 X is a new rod and I have not yet had a chance to fish with it. I do know that my "regular" one is just right. It can easily handle a 5# bass. I tend to forget that the action of a rod describes how it flexes under load and is not necessarily a function of the backbone it possesses. I guess what I am trying to say is that they can have the same action and the other can still have more backbone. let me know if you decide to get either one! Quote

Super User islandbass Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 Ha! Good one! ;D Have you considered the Loomis DS rods? Also, I know one of the Crucial DS rods was actually designed for drop shotting in heavier cover. Spinning only on that one though. Quote

I think i'm going to get the Loomis DS Rod, a friend has it and has taken in some 7 and 8lb bass on it. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted October 10, 2007 Super User Posted October 10, 2007 I've looked in the Loomis Catalog and for their DS rods, but here is what they have to say about their DS rods: http://products.gloomis.com/gl/products/family.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032506&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181201&bmUID=1192049171070 It is similar to the Lami site in that the "heavier" rod is designed to handle heavier cover and greater depths. Good luck on your final decision. 8-) Quote
Infidel. Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I stuck the fish in my left hand on my TBC69MLXF with 6lb cuda. It went six and some change. I also caught an 11lb blue cat with it. I am sure the Avid would stand up just as well. Quote
