I have had some issues this year with braided line. I use it only when I'm fishing a jig because of the sensitivity issue. I have tried them all this year from Stren, Power Pro, Spider Wire and my fav, Sufix. All have one thing in common for me, snapping on hooksets. :) It is not a bad batch issue or drag issue, this has been ruled out long ago. I need help. I don't know if Florocarbon is the way to go because it is the most sensitive other than braid. I keep retying and this keeps happening. I check for frayed line and everything. I can't figure it out. :-? What do ya'll recommend?

I am only taking a guess on this, but is your knot slipping?  What knot do you use?  If you have recovered any of the jigs and seen the other piece of line still tied than obviously that rules that out.  If not then try putting a heavy hook in a fence post and setting the hook just to check that the knot isn't slipping.

I tie a clinch knot, then do a standard overhand knot twice. Never had a knot issue, ever.

Take a magic marker and mark the line every inch for 1 foot. Next time the line gives, count the marks on the line. If you don't have any marks, then it's a random line issue. If you have a few lines, then some how the line is being comprimised in the water, if all the marks come back, then most likely, it's the knot.

are you fishing in rocks?braid will cut on rocks easily.use a palomar knot with crazy glue so your knot won't slip.other than rocks i have never seen braid snap on a hookset.

If you tie a polomar knot, you will be losing alot of jigs my friend! I lost so many jigs tying polomar's and was too stubborn to change it up, but it definetly was slipping on hook sets. If its actually line snapping, check your guides and make sure they aren't sharp  :)

I use a Palomar exclusively and have never lost a jig or fish because of it  :)

I use power pro braid with palomar knots. I have broken a rod, but never the line. JMHE

What size braid are you using. The reason I ask is shock strength. Braid has a very low shock strength because it has so little stretch. If your using 30lb test, or less, that may be your problem.

Cheers,

Ghoti my friend,  I think you are on to something.  I have been using 20# braid w/ 6# diameter.  I just didn't want to overload the line rating on my rods.  I think I will try a larger braid and see what happens.  Thanks for all the suggestions guys.  Good idea pfluemis on using the magic marker.  I will try that too.  :)

On BC gear I would recommend 40-50 lb test, a palomar knot, and make sure you wet your knot when cinching down.  The only time I have snapped my line is when it was frayed and I was too lazy to retie.

I had a knot slipping problem with braid awhile back.  My buddy told me to wet the line before you pull the palomar knot tight.  Maybe this is another option, I use 30 pd Stren braid and have not had a problem since he told me this.  Hope it helps, good luck!

Pond Hopper,  do you feel that the larger diameter braid such as 40-50 lb. test is sensitive enough for jig fishing?

The Moderators are suppose to help keep things on tract, not OFF TOPIC, but I just can't help myself...

There are a lot of alternatives to braid. Why not experiment around with some other lines. Some guys, like me, have tried braid and moved on. Just a suggestion.

Yep, is plenty sensitive and strong!  But with braid you do not need the eye crossing hooksets alot are use to...although I dont always practice what I preach.

So much for the supposed indestructability of braided, huh ? :-/

Don 't know from where such assumption came but braided is not as indestructable as many think, oh yeah, the line is tuff like nails but it doesn 't mean it won 't break and specially if it happens to find sharp objects in it 's path like Dodge mentioned, rocks, broken sharp edged rocks are the most common reason why braided line breaks.

And because you think braided is indestructible ( wrong assumption ) you simply don 't bother to do one of the most basics principles of fishing: to check your line frequently while fishing. ::)

I use 10 lb Suffix with a Uni knot.  never untied and never snaped.  my drag gives at its setting and the line dosent snap.  I am not sure why there are so many recomendations for 30+ lb braid unles your fishing in the heavy cover.

if you were used to using 8lb mono and went to 8 lb diamiter braid you would lose half of the reason i use braid.  long acurate casts.

I used braid for about a month since it dont have much  stretch i was loosing fish when they jumped .But as a few  of the other posters have said braid isnt indestructable .It is great for long cast BUT if your casting to rocks it dont matter if ur using 80 lb braid it will give in .Now i have  one rod with braid for ideal conditions and it is 4 lb power pro on a spinning rig,i did have 6 rods filled with PP dont get me wrong its a great line but just not my cup of tea all i use now majority of the time is trilene big game and trilene maxx for the smaller test neither of these have let me down .I also have a few reels spooled with Yo Zuri  hybrid wich is  UV resistant i can keep um in the sun for days without any worry .Perfect for my saltwater rods

I use braid extensively, even in crystal clear, shallow water. Sometimes with a fluoro leader and sometimes not. I think it's best to buy braided line based on it's diameter rather than lb test rating. 20lb braid is mighty strong if you just pull on it (most braids over test) but it will snap easily with a strong hoookset if it's nicked at all.  tight lines

do your jigs have an enclosed eye? sometimes power pro will slip thru that tiny space in the eye. also check the guides on your rod, they may have a nick that is causing your power pro to snap. i use pp on 3 spinners and 2 baitcasters and i use 10, 20, and 30# with 65# on my flippin stick, and i have never snapped my line setting the hook. i also use a palomar knot.

I, too, favor Sufix braid.  I think the problem with braid snapping off is due to undetected wear/abrasion on the line.  Though very strong, braid is very subject to wear and tear, especially around rock structure.  This wear is much harder to see and feel on braid than on other line types.  Knots can be another problem.  I use only Palomar knots with braid and always add a drop of "fishing glue".  You can buy this glue at BPS.  As far as the sensitivity issue goes, there are two ways to skin this cat.  One would be high end rods, in which case all lines are plenty sensitive enough. An added bonus for high end rods is there laqck of weight in comparison to lesser rods. With less sensitive rods, braid becomes a viable option as the line will more than make up for any lack in the rod itself.

I use Helium LTX II's for my jigging rods. I think my line snapping issue will be resolved soon. The line I'm using (20# test/6# diam.) just does not have the shock strength that a higher pound test would have. I am going to spool one rod with Yozuri Hybrid 12lb. and the other with Sufix Braid 40lb. I will see which one I like better over the next couple of weeks. BTW, to all that answered, thank you for the help!!
