Difference in Line

I have only used one kind of line, and that's the kind at wal mart...It works fine....So I think...what's the difference between cheap line and expensive line?  :-/

cheap line doesn"t have much quality control thats why its cheap i bet if u measure the diamater of the line throughout the spool it will vary which is a set up for a line break.Having consistant line size is only part of having a perfect line if ur line says 10 pound test and you happen to tie to a bad part of line that is only 6 pound test your knot will fail OR ur line will just break for no reason .besides there aint much diff in price you can get trileneXT for 5 bucks and some change and ist very consistant and has never let me down .All in all your line is all thats between you and ur fish .Your reel can fail ur rod can break if u have good line u can still bring that fish in.Dont skimp on line its very important 8-)

If you consider all the costs associated with "going fishing," line and hooks are VERY small components. Save money somewhere else, this is THE most important tackle you use.

Like has been said before, its not worth it to skimp on line. You don't need to buy the most expensive stuff on the planet, but buying the cheapest doesn't make any sense either. I happen to like Seaguar InvisX, but it is pricey. Trilene is usually ok and decently cheap.

Well, wal-mart carries some good line.... Berkley XL, XT and Big Game for starters and they also carry Silver Thread, Stren & Spiderwire products as well as several others...

so which lines are you considering junk?  WHich have you tried?

Most people would consider several of those good lines, I know I do.

Overall strength, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, life span, stretch, relative diameter, visibility, consistancy and for me perhaps most importantly, memory (manageability).

I've used Vanish Transition in 12lb test in crimson red color... the line itself is pretty good, but the red color seems more annoying than useful because you can't seem to see it either way

I was not a fan of the red either- very hard to see.  Just as well use regular Flouro is what I figured.

Using a good fishing line can not be overstated- I am very line consious, it has to fit the technique and be fresh.

I believe in good line. I remember when Stren came out and the advantage that it provided. Now that I am old thoughI still use Stren or Trilene mainly. I have one heavy action rod with braid but I still use that mono. I have not tried floro as of yet because of the tint of the waters that I fish.

Often times you can tell aot about a line by just letting it come off the spool, some have so much memory just from the spool due to the composition and age as well. Watch for good line that is on sale, it may be much better than expected. An old buddy of mine pretty much quit fishing about 5 years ago (yeah, he is still my buddy). He agve me a bunch of line that he had laying around and I took it on a boy scout fishing weekend. This trilene line (6lb) was  5 years old and as strong as the new stuff I had on my rod. I was very impressed. These same rods with that same old line will go out this weekend to a private stock pond and I have every confidence that the line will perform fine.  I will let you know.

What do you mean...by "Save and except to clear water." ?

Sorry, "Save and except to" is a legal term used in deeds and legal descriptions (work).  I meant that in clear water, most fish are more spooky... or in clear water, color and diameter of line has a much greater influence on whether a fish may bite or spook from it.

clear... some will say red like that shakespere cajon line- I'd stick with regular clear
