Jake. Posted September 15, 2007 Posted September 15, 2007 Which rod series do you believe performs better? I know G loomis is a great brand, but are the GL2s really as good as the avids? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 16, 2007 Super User Posted September 16, 2007 I have not used a GL2 but I have 3 Avid spinning rods and a Loomis IMX rod. For the money and if you can find it on clearance, the Avid is the best rod for the money right now. I would take a look at both and see which one feels the best but if it was my choice, I would get the Avid instead of the GL2. Quote
lubina Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 I would get the Avid instead of the GL2. Me too....I have both. Quote
Guest avid Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 No contest. St. Croix Avid over Loomis GL2 anyday. Quote
SneakySnook Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 I love g-loomis rods but if I was going to pick one I will say avid. The Avid is lighter than the gl2. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 The G Loomis brand doesn't seperate itself from the rest of the field until the IMX and GLX line of rods. I think the GL2 and GL3 are priced the way they are because of the name G Loomis, but the IMX and GLX are worth what you pay. Quote
basspro48 Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 I had an avid once, it was a custom built flipping stick on an avid blank, I hated it...I recently found a GL2 on sale for $100, so I bought it just because it looked like a really good deal, best $100 I ever spent. Although I have never used a factory avid, I would take the loomis over it any day. Quote

In my opinion, the way St. Croix and Loomis stack up against each other looks something like this: Triumph/Premier* < GL2 < GL3/Avid** < Legend Tourney? < IMX < Legend Ultra < GLX * IMO, the Triumph and Premier are ok for someone starting out or someone who only fishes occasionally, with the Premier being the slightly better choice. ** I view the GL3 and Avid as on a pretty even playing field, but the Avid gives you more for the money and I do prefer the feel of them. I wasn't really sure where to put the Legend Tourney, as it isn't popular at all where I work. The only time we get them in is when someone wants to special order one, whereas we try to keep the other ones in stock. Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 17, 2007 Super User Posted September 17, 2007 The Gl2 is not in the same level of the Avid, the Avid is one step above the GL2. Quote
