Powell rod user's

Please tell me what rod or rods you have/use, your likes, dislikes, and general opinions of them. Also where did you buy them? Tackle warehouse has quite a few, but they don't have them all, and a few I am interested in are not listed.

I own the 702ML Spinning rod and the 704c and 734c casting rods.

I absolutely love these rods. I can't find a real negative point to them. Lightweight, durable, super sensitive, for what you get they are also very well priced. I have fished half a dozen of the other models as well. I am not really a fan of the swimbait rods.

I buy mine from Sportsmans Warehouse locally.

I second fourbizzle's statements.  These are good rods, and I think their quality belies the price.  If a person is tight on money, I'd buy the 683 CEF (medium-heavy with extra fast tip) and/or the 703 MEF (medium with extra fast tip).  These two rods can cover just about every situation, if needed.  I've used the heavy power 684 for jigs and texas rigs.  It is a very sensitive rod and is perfect for flipping and pitching.  If you're going to be making long casts I'd use the 683c rather than the 684.  The 684 doesn't cast as far due to the lack of bend in the rod, which is typical for a heavy jig rod.  I haven't had the chance to use the 683 CB yet, but that should change in the next week.  I'll let you know how I like it.

I agree with the crazy one the 683CEF is the one.

I got my 682C for super light jigs. Which it does great. However, most of the time I find myself wishing I would of went up a number on the power.

I have been using the 7.11 H for heavy swimbaits ( > 3 oz ) and I have nothing but good things to say in every aspect of its performance.

I found the balance of the Powells to be off.  Also, If you pry that hook keeper up by accident (it happens when you are in a hurry when you see schooling fish).  Once it's pried up it can't be bent back down like it was originally.  It's amazing how often your line gets tangled in that pried up keeper.  I did notice they put the dropshot keeper behind the reel.  That was a good move.  Gary Dobyns designed all of the Powell Rods and fixed the above and took it a few steps further with his new rods aka Dobyns Rods.  How many of you have tried the Dobyns and the Powells??

I have one of each but not in the same category. There is no way to compare the DX 704c to the Powell 7.11 H., one thing I like a lot is the hook keeper.

Hopefully I'll get soon the 795 ML SB to have an even comparison. I just realized that I've ordered this rod 3 months ago >

Thanks guys, I will look at the Dobyns rods also. I'll tell you the first rod I would be looking at in either brand would be a pitching rod, followed up by a spinning rod for use with drop shot, shakey heads, etc....

The pitching rod would be used mostly with 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 oz jigs and t-riged plastics. Pitching in weeds, laydowns, and under/around boat docks from 0-12 FOW.

 The spinning rod would be used for tossing 4" senkos and small flukes in early spring in our ultra clear water, In summer it would be used on the drop shot. Not sure how much shakey head use it will get, but some I am sure.

Now I just gotta decide which ones to buy.

Well the decision just got tougher..............went to the tackle shop today and they had a lot of new Kistlers........I really liked the Jig-n-Toad Magnsium TS, even liked the Graphite Plus's I pickde up, and the Helium LTA...........OMG they did not have a big selection but they felt GREAT. I am gonna have to say right now Kistler is in the lead, as I have felt them, I have yet to find a shop that stocks/carrys Powell's or Dobyn's, and I am leary about pulling the trigger on a rod I cannot feel/hold.

I just purchased my first powell. Thanks jay. 704 CB.  Had it out twice so far and I don't have anything negative to say.  Love how light it is and how well It handles fish.  It's only a medium, but I was able to pull a 3# out of some fairly thick stuff.  Got mine local at Sportsmans Warehouse as well.
