Trent, B Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I am thinking about getting a new reel but I can't decide between the Quantum Tour Edition PT, Jonny Morrison Elite, or PFluger Supreme. Which one is my best bet to buy? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 You want my honest OPINION..........of the 3 you mentioned I would go with the Quantum first, then the Pflueger, then the Johnny Morris. I like Quantum casting reels........not a big fan of there spinning reels. On the other hand, I like Pflueger spinning reels, but there casting reels leave my a little flat. There will be no more BPS brand reels of either type (or rods for that matter) for me. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I am thinking about getting a new reel but I can't decide between the Quantum Tour Edition PT, Jonny Morrison Elite, or PFluger Supreme. Which one is my best bet to buy? I have two Quantum Energy Baitcasting Reels (same size as the Tour Edition PT) and I don't really like them. They are somewhat heavy and are uncomfortable to fish with for long periods of time (I would get a lot of hand cramps). I replaced these with Revo SC's and am much happier (and experiencing less pain throughout the day). I have several Johnny Morris Reel's and I am quite pleased with them. They are comfortable to use, but I am not sure of their longevity (I haven't had mine long). I never used the Pflueger Supreme. I have the Pflueger President, which I really like, but this reel is different from the Supreme. Quote
shortbasser Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I was a Quantum Energy reel user for a good number of years. When the new Abu Garcia Revo reels hit the market last year I became and instant convert. I now own 3 of the Revo STX's. To say that I am happy with these reels would be an understatement. The STX just happens to be cheaper than all of the 3 reels you mentioned. You can find lots of threads on here about the new Revo series. Most folks that own them are super satisfied. I had to send one of the 3 back to Abu Garcia last week at their request. I found some pitting in the metal frame and whipped an email to them. Got an answer in short order. As of yesterday I have a NEW reel on the way to me. I called them to get a status update and when they found that I am off on a fishing trip this weekend they got hot and shipped a new one FEDEX. I will have it Fri. So far I am happy with the reels and really impressed with the customer service. You can also check out the review on the new Revo series at Tackletour.com. Shortbasser Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 I have a few Energy PT's, but not the tour editions. And I have Johnny Morris reels, but not the elite. I used a buddy's Supreme for a day. It and the JM reel are the same reel, with different names on them. I like all of them. I don't find any of them uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. If you can, put one of each on a rod, and see what they feel like when you slap it in your palm. All cast very well, all have good drags, all are smooth. It all comes down to how well each fits your hands. If you're new to baitcasters, the dual cast controls on the JM, or Supreme, can really help out while you're learning to cast. I had my wife using one of my JM's, with very few problems, on her first day with a baitcaster. She used it for about 4 hours, and had about three "over-runs". I use mine, both the PT's and the JM's, every time I go out. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 I purchased a Quantum Tour Edition PT last year and fished it for about 3 months, then I started to have some issues with it. Something was wrong with breaking system and the drag washer cracked. For the time I was able to fish it, it was a fine reel. But to give a recommendation for the reels you have picked, I can't say for sure. The Tour Edition I think runs about $230. For $20 more, I would go with the Daiwa Zillion or you could save a few bucks and get a Shimano Curado. Quote

lubina Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 I can only commend on the Quantums, I have fish them for many years and they are battle horse machines but the are heavy. If you are looking at the Tour, $ 239.00 for a 10.1 oz reel......I don't think so. For less than that money you can get a Daiwa Fuego at 7.4 oz or a Revo STX at 8.6 oz with at least similar features and performance, if not better. Good luck. Quote
Super User Sam Posted September 7, 2007 Super User Posted September 7, 2007 My Johnny Morris reel blew up on Smith Mountain Lake last year. When I took it back to BPS the sales guy told me that I would do better with a Shimano Curado 100. All of my baitcasters are Shimano. All but two of my spinning rigs are Shimano. I have two BPS spinning reels that I use for pond fishing and to give to kids and others I take fishing. I use only the Shimano products and so far I have been very pleased. As for your query, all I can add to the conversation is to avoid the Johnny Morris baitcaster. Quote
