CP Bass Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Hello, I just had my BPS "XPS Performance Graphite IM8" rod snap a couple days ago. Does anyone know if BPS will warranty it in any way? Also this was a gift from my girlfriend for my birthday last year. I cannot find any details about this rod model (PG66MH) Was this a decent rod or a POS? The rod broke on a hookset of this thing (9.3lbs) Another pic of the break. Thanks, Drew Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 CP Bass, From the looks of the break. I would say manufacturing defect. The best thing I could recommend is to contact BPS directly tell them the model of the rod, and describe were the breakage accured (right behind the fore grip). Hope this helps.... Tight Lines!!! Super User roadwarrior Posted July 7, 2006 Super User Posted July 7, 2006 I have ALWAYS received excellent customer service from BPS. Take it to their return desk and I am sure they will replace it for you without any hassel. Quote
manasota Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Good job landing the fish with a busted rod! ;D Quote
CP Bass Posted July 7, 2006 Author Posted July 7, 2006 Thanks for the info. Closest BPS is a little over 4 hours away in Auburn NY, so I'll probably send an email first. Reeling in a pike like that through the pads and slop with a "2 piece rod" and then netting it since your fishing alone certainly was a quite a show................. Quote
Al Wolbach Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I work at BPS part-time and feel sure they will replace this rod, but they probably need to look at it. If they give you a hassle ask to speak to the fishing manager, he will resolve the problem. They can tell the age of the rod by the numbers on the rod. Should not have a problem.....................Al If you e-mail them be sure to send the pictures. Quote
CP Bass Posted August 27, 2007 Author Posted August 27, 2007 Well, I was pleased that BPS replaced my broken rod last year with no questions asked. Very cool. But.................... I just snapped my replacement on Saturday in the exact same spot. The rod had under 200 casts on it. This one snapped on a hookset in open water on a 2.5 pound bass. Question 1, has anyone else had issues with the XPS Performance Graphite IM8 rod. (only available as a combo) Question 2, does anyone know if BPS will allow a substitution so I can get a different model of BPS rod. I now have zero confidence in this model. I really do not care to have another one. I know I can email them for details but I am just looking for anyone's experience first. Thanks! Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Exchanging the rod may not be a problem, but the rod you recieve as a replacement maybe. Bass Pro "redesigned" the XPS Extreme Performance rod this year and the new rod is not as good as the one you broke. The new XPS Performance only has 7 guides now as opposed to the 8 the old ones had. Also, the new rods don't have the screw off end for the BPS rod weighting system like the older model had. I have two XPS Performance rods for jerkbaits and topwater and I am trying to find "back-up" rods for these two just in case one breaks, because these rods are the best rods I have found to date for those two applications (that includes looking at St. Croix, G Loomis and other high end rods). Super User cart7t Posted August 27, 2007 Super User Posted August 27, 2007 I sold a bunch of those on ebay last year. Probably 20 - 30 of them at least, maybe more until my source dried up. As for the quality? Well, I took them out to fish with a few times. They were completely unacceptable for fishing any kind of soft plastic with, OK for other uses like spinnerbaits or top waters. OK rod. I wouldn't pay anymore than $30 for one though. Never had one break either. Quote

I look all the time and I can only find the newer models (which I thouugt were just like the older ones until I purchased one and found out the are different in every way, especially in power and action). If you have an older one to sell, I would be interested. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 28, 2007 Super User Posted August 28, 2007 I no longer have any of them. The older ones, that accept the XPS weight system, were given away a few years ago as part of a Nitro boat promotion. I see them often along with a few that pop up on the forums from time to time. Guest the_muddy_man Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Hey 2 years ago Risk Kid gave me a BPS Woo Davies rod. I was fsihing with Fluke at the Fork and he showed me a trick to get a spinner bait off a stump; You use your rod tip: Great freakin idea the spinner bait came up and the Insert on the Tip was going down the line. I took it back to a BPS, no questions, they said go get another one exactly like it and made the exchange on the spot Quote
CP Bass Posted August 31, 2007 Author Posted August 31, 2007 Thanks for the info lads. I guess I'll head to BPS and try to talk the manager into letting me get a different model. I have no problem shelling out a few extra bucks for an upgrade. To me it is unacceptable to have a rod snap like this. Once can be a defective rod, fine I can deal with that but twice in the same spot is a defective model as far as I am concerned. XPS = X-treme ??????????? Quote

CP Bass, I also had one of the XPS extreme rods to break the tip on a hook set. I called BPS in Tenn (bought the rod on my way home from vacation) and talked to the Shipping and Receiving supervisor. She sent a tube for the return and asked if I wanted the same or an upgrade. I told her the same and not only did she ship it out that day but she shipped it NEXT DAY! I can't say enough good things about BSP customer service. Thank you ROSE! Quote
CP Bass Posted September 1, 2007 Author Posted September 1, 2007 "asked if I wanted the same or an upgrade." SD, This quote made my day!!! That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Hope I have the same choice. Thanks. Quote
