DEISWERTH Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 You guys that use braided line, couple questions for you. What kind do you like? Never use any of it before, but kinda like the feel of power pro, it feels a little more softer than others. What pound test should I get for bass, up to 5# class? Do you tie directly to the hook or use a leader? I would think if you would tie to the hook without a leader, it would be the strongest, but didn't know if the fish would see it better. Thanks for any info. Doug Quote
bocabasser Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 10, 20 and 30 pound on all of my spinners. my flippin rod has 65#. i will sometimes use a flouro leader when fishing my pointers or other crankbaits. i love power pro in moss green. imo there is nothing better. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 I use the high vis yellow Power Pro. I use 2 sizes 8# and 30#. The 8/1 I use for vertical jigging and drop shot. It has been on for four years and I haven't even turned it around yet. The 30# is tied directly to spinnerbaits but I use a 15# fluro leader for jigs, craws, tubes, etc because I fish very clear water and lack the guts to tie it direct. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 I used Stren Superbraid 30# on two of my casting outfits, and 10# on one of my spinning. I like it a lot. I've never used Power Pro. I've heard there is little to choose from between them, except Stren is a little more expensive (true), and Power pro looses its color sooner (unknown if true). I just like Stren products. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 Power Pro & Tuf Line 20lb. Quote
ivey_fish_camp Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I put 30# Spider Wire stealth on my baitcaster and I had nothing but problems, I threw it away, replaced it with mono and it worked fine. Will Power Pro work better on my baitcaster? Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 I have tried these: Power pro: cast's ok, lossed it's color fast, didn't like it at all Suffix: not much differant than power pro, liked it better than power pro, but still not happy with it. More $ than power pro too. Spiderwire stealth: The cheapest of the "superlines", also not any better or worse than power pro/suffix IMHO, I have more expeirance with this line than the others as my local wal-mart has it, and it's cheaper. Still want some thing better....which I have found, Spiderwire ultra cast: retains it's color for a very long time, the smoothest casting, quietest braid I have tried. As strong and senstive as any of the others, the best baid anyone has made.....yet. Quote
DEISWERTH Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 Thanks for the info guys! I'm going to get some of the power pro and give it a try. Was up in Canada last weekend for a tournament I fish at a lodge and lost three 4-5# largemouth. All three hit not to soon after my senko hit the water and with the mono I was using, I know I did not get a good hook set waayyy out at the end of my cast. On all three tried setting the hook again as I was bringing them in, but lost all!! Would have been the difference from 9th place to at least 3rd and about $800, plus maybe lunker ($250) This is really the reason I want to try braid. Doug Quote
surfer Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Suffix 10# with floro leader. Adding a leader is adding a weak spot at the line to line knot, but i fish water that is 10 ft visability and feal it is nescisary. Suffix dose loose its color, but with a leader its not an isue for me. I like the suffix better than the Power Pro. Power Pro is the most popular. Quote
Taliesin Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 My only problem with Power Pro is that it looses it's color too quickly. Once it turns white, it's very visible. That being said, I still use it on almost all of my spinning reels. I tie it directly to my lures, but rarely use it on anything but "reaction bite" lures where the fish won't see it for long. For jigs, t-rigs, c-rigs, and other slow techniques, I fall back to mono. I really don't care for that solution, because those slow baits is where the increased sensitivity and lack of stretch can make a difference. I am thinking of using a flouro leader on the slow baits and using the braid as the main line there. Quote
lubina Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I use braid in most of my spinning and all bc for soft plastics. Of the one I have used. Sufix best. Powerpro pretty good. Spiderwire ( all ) and P-Line worsen. 15 lbs for spinning and 50 lbs for baitcasters. Always a fluoro leader except for frogs. Quote

It is already opaque whether it is white or green or any other color. I am still willing to use it in some instances and the white color no longer bothers me. Quote
dumb_dog11 Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 i heard theres new Ugly Braid by shakespeare and that it restists abrasion really well Quote
cr22shep Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 powerbraid never any problems!!!!!!!!!!! ;D Quote
ABC123 Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I've tested quite few lines this year. Things I have learned is: I won't ever buy Power pro again. Fray's too easy. Color is poor. "Coating" wears off too easy. Too much memory. I need to try Suffix and Tuf line (heard good things about it) to make my testing complete. So far I like Stren superbraid the best, with Spider wire Stealth still being a reasonable option. I used Spider wire braids for years, but some of the other lines coming out are as good, if not better. Quote

ssaB_htuoM_egraL Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Bringing this back to the top. Any more information between Stren Super braid and pro power braid, maybe which is better. Also, I will be putting this on a Baitcaster, should this baitcaster have the MH rod or the Med rod @6'6". Thanks for any more info to this topic, I am a little confused about lining up with braid. Super User Alpster Posted August 23, 2007 Super User Posted August 23, 2007 Power Pro and direct to lure. That's the ticket! Ronnie Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I'm in the minority here, but I like Cabela's RipCord Si Plus and on the rods I use braid, I tie directly to the lure. Quote
Cory20 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I use McCoy 30# and really like it. Soft, no memory yet. Anyone else tried this brand? Quote
Joey_Doe Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 I tried heavy and light spiderwire, it's too waxy imo, always dug into the spool with heavy lures or strong casts. Power Pro on the other hand is a gift from the man upstairs, I love it and will fish no other braid, compact like tiny rope, strong as can be and casts forever. Power Pro all day long... Quote
