basspro48 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I've been drooling over all of Shimano's new reels and man do they look absolutely AWESOME...but one very "not awesome" thing I've noticed about them is their price tags, $270 for a new sustain, $700+ for a new stella, and $350 for the core...this is nuts, I can barely afford $200 for a new curado (which was also given an unjustified $80 dollar price hike IMO) It used to be $120 for the most reliable and plain best casting reel for bass, what's happening?!?!?!? Super User Raul Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 The only thing the new Curado and the old Curado have in common is the name, completely different animals, side by side the new Curado has all the goodies and more that you found in the old Chronarch SF at a much better price, $200 bones is a very reasonable price for a better reel than the old Chronarch SF which was $250, in other words, you save 50 dollars and get a much better fishing machine. basspro48 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 Very good point there Raul, the curado is a good reel at a decent price...the only thing I have noticed is that after handling the citica and the rado I didn't notice anything that would have justified paying an extra $80, so I bought 2 citica's...Don't get me wrong the curado is a nice reel I just went with the cheaper almost as good alternative. I guess I'm just really shocked at the prices of their new reels, especially the new spinning reels. $700 for the stella, I could get a Van-Staal for cheaper than that and be set for the next 25 years...What I'm really trying to get at here is I'm sure the new reels are amazing I just wish I could afford em Quote

Super User cart7t Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 As I understand from those who know, it takes a year of decent fishing before a Van Staal gets broken in correctly. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 Actually with the new reels we the customers won, the new Citica 100 is just like the old Curado 100 with a gain, it weights 1.2 ounces less, the Citica 200 has the same characteristics and more goodies than the old Curado 200 SF had for 30 dollars less, the only thing I didn 't like about the new 200 sizes is the increase in overall weight. So Shimano took away from you the old Curado and gave you a better reel for the same money. Following the same scale they took away from you the old Citica and gave you the new Cuxis for the same money and the Cruxis has goodies the old Citica could only dream about. We the customers got the best part, better for less. Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 I, too, am somewhat disappointed with Shimano's price hikes, but if the new reels offer even better quality/durability, then they will probably prove to be worth the price. I know with proper maintenance, I'll be using my Curado for 15 yrs +. Have a buddy who has a Van Staal & he likes it, but said he probably wouldn't buy another, due to price. In my opinion only, I just think they are homely, but they are truly built like tanks & weigh about as much. Quote
Triton9 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 good point BP48, the prices of most of their reels are too high, but you get what you pay for, the best reels on the market Quote

Another good point, and yet again your endless pit of information has persuaded me otherwise Have a buddy who has a Van Staal & he likes it, but said he probably wouldn't buy another, due to price. In my opinion only, I just think they are homely, but they are truly built like tanks & weigh about as much. Yeah they do cost a pretty penny but they last forever and are solid reels for anything from medium freshwater to heavy saltwater applications... But this right here is what want SOOOOOOOO bad, I just can't make myself spend over half of my cash on it http://www.***.com/descpageRLCSHIMANO-SCOCR.html# Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 OOOOOOOOOOoooh grasshopper... Bait Monkey say that look very nice sitting on top of GLX PR844C. Bait Monkey remember my birthday next month....OOOOOOOOOOOOoooh...very good. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 Don't feel bad basspro48, all new Japanese tackle has taken a price hike. Quote

Bait Monkey remember my birthday next month....OOOOOOOOOOOOoooh...very good. BUT, RW, could you even imagine it sitting on your custom GLX PR844C with the Ti SiC guides, custom fit, exotic burl split grip and might as well throw in matching color thread trim and a BR logo decal under the finish. ;D I bet I could build you a rod for that new reel you haven't ordered yet... remember, Raul says reels should be paired up with "like" priced rods... I can fix you up with a new "stella worthy" rod if you get the itch!! :) Your good buddy, flechero ;D ;D ;D ;D Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 flechero, I would like that very much! 8-) I'll send you a PM later and we'll work out the details. Thanks for the offer. Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 24, 2007 Super User Posted August 24, 2007 I know which rod RW needs to pait up that new Stella he has in mind , the Fenwick Super Techna AV straight from Japan, the rods that the Sighmaster Jun Shoji uses to fish with, at 68,000 - 78,000 yens a piece ( ) is just what the doctor prescibed for Mr Roadwarrior. Super User roadwarrior Posted August 25, 2007 Super User Posted August 25, 2007 Thanks Raul! Tomorrow night's Powerball is worth $300MM. I don't play, but maybe I'll buy one tomorrow. If I win, I'll buy both of us a complete set of everything they make and reels to go with them! Quote
