SimonSays Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I recently started using the Berkley Vanish as my Fluoro leader, many have said to try and use seaguar inviz but I can't really afford that at the moment and I have a whole spool of berley just sitting around. In light of this I have 15 lb power pro with an 8lb fluoro, what I've been told to do has had me lose about 5 fish on my last outing (half a pack of fat ikas :'( ) . Any thoughts or ideas? ps: I use a surgeons knot to connect the 2, maybe it's my knot also? Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 23, 2007 Super User Posted August 23, 2007 Since your main line has greater resistance than your leader set your drag to the leader 's resistance, if you are using an 8 lb test leader then your drag should be set to a little bit over 2 lbs. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I had bad luck with the surgeons knot when connecting a braid to a flouro. What I found to be the best is a double uni knot, but fold over the braid (to make it twice as thick) before tying it. I hope that doesn't sound confusing. Quote
surfer Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Do you know where the problem is occurring? Is it the floro snapping at the knot or in the middle? (loosen the drag) The knot coming untied? (use a better knot). I use 10 lb braid and 6 lb Floro invizx joined with a Uni-Uni knot. The knot has never com untied, but i recently realized my breaks would always occur in the floro at the knot. So this appears to be the weakest link in my set up. The bend put into the floro at the knot with the very thin braded is a very sharp bend while the bend tied to the hook is of a larger radius. It's as if the braid was cutting into the floro. Is there a better Line to Line knot for these thin light lines? Quote
smallfry Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 I used to use Vanish for leader material all the time. Always used a uni to uni knot and set my drag like I normally would for that lb. test. The only time I broke off was when setting the hook extra hard at close range power fishing. Last year I started using Stren flourocarbon for leaders, and this year I've also been using some of the new Trilene flouro. No break offs at all with either. The stren is just a little stiffer, but For leaders I'd say they are about equal. I still use some of my remaining Vanish, but not for power fishing; only in applications like dropshotting where I use a sweep or lift set. I've never had a problem in those applications. Quote
