THE CAVITRON BUZZBAIT

Most of the time being in the right spot is the key. Sometimes it's a combination of location and presentation, but occasionally it's fishing EXACTLY the right lure. For me, Saturday and Sunday mornings were all about the lure.

I arrived at my favorite local pond about an hour before sun-up. Having never fished the Cavitron Buzzbait, I tossed in out towards the middle of the pond to check my settings and get a feel for the lure before approaching a prime target. With a slight reel adjustment, I was set.

On my second cast, or first real cast, the bait churned up about eight feet of water and absolutely exploded! Taking heed of a tip from Mattlures regarding "playing" single hook lures, I tried to power this fish to the bank, but she would have none of that. There in the morning twilight, she made her initial jump and my heart jumped into my throat. I landed her a few minutes later to find the hook taken deep. I worked with the lure for a minute or so, then put the fish back in the water for a breather and to gather myself. I brought her back in and methodically located the hook and was able to remove the buzzbait. This might not have been possible if I wasn't able to put my ENTIRE hand inside the mouth of this beast!

On four casts, to exactly the same spot, I landed three bass well over 5 lbs. During the next hour and a half or so, I landed two more and a third threw the Cavitron. This was the best largemouth fishing I have ever had, but that's not the end of the story...

Sunday morning I'm up and at 'em again. Two guys were throwing another brand of buzzbaits on MY pond, and in MY spot! I watched them for a few minutes and moved on down the bank. I didn't have any initial success, but the fat lady wasn't singing either. As I approached a second culvert on the pond, I cast across the silt hump and moved the lure over a small pool on the near side, my side. The strike was decisive, the battle was on. This turned out to be my big bass of the weekend and she was followed by three more fine fish.

Last weekend was all about the CAVITRON BUZZBAIT. If you don't have a couple, get one.

Must have been a buzzbait weekend. I too had the biggest LM of my life on a strike king buzz on Friday night just before dark. Thing just crushed it. Best part of it was, it was my first time ever fishing a buzzbait and now I can't wait to order a couple more cavitrons. Bad thing was I was trying to play the fish. He jumped once and threw the hook. Like you RW.....my heart was pounding and even though I didn't land him.....he would have been easily 5 lbs. Had a huge mouth on him.

What colors and size are you having the hits on RW? Mine was only a 1/4 white strike king and I don't think I had a good hook set because of the small size of the lure.

3/8 oz, black on black (jig and blade). The Cavitron Buzzbait has a unique "chirping" sound that apparently drives bass crazy, or at least drove my pet bass mad! Lots of guys throw buzzbaits on this pond with little success. The guys I mentioned that were there Sunday never got a strike between them.

I believe it had something to do with the lure.   :

Thats what I was thinking. From what I heard you want the blade to be in disguise as much as possible. Its there for attention only. Again I don't know jack about them.....just what I heard. Going to be picking up two of them for sure.

Buzz baits are more than just about the blade, it's about the noise made by the blade, sometimes it's a chirping, squealing, or clackers. I had excellent luck with a Boogie Man buzz bait because the blade hits against the wire.

Like I said in my post above. I never threw a buzzbait until this weekend. When I saw that explosion on the top of the water, I knew I was hooked on this style of fishing. Talk about fish hammering a bait.

Like I said in my post above. I never threw a buzzbait until this weekend. When I saw that explosion on the top of the water, I knew I was hooked on this style of fishing. Talk about fish hammering a bait.

That's just good topwater fishing. They'll do that on just about any topwater bait. Yep, it's a rush alright.

When topwater fishing, every cast, every inch, every chug could be a hookset opportunity. Be ready to reel down and set at all times. Just like jig fishing. I've found that medium heavy action rods work best for buzzbaits. NEVER use a buzzbait without a trailer hook for those short strikers. I've caught more bass on the trailer than I have the main hook.

Some days a buzzbait is the only thing that will catch a fish and some buzzbaits are the only ones that will work. The bass in my avatar was caught on a Strike King white "tri-blade" buzzbait. It was the only one they would bite on. I tried a few others and no luck. When I went back to the one that worked, it was on fire!

I agree, it's all about the noise and it's also all about color too. It needs to look like a shad is chasing a bug or something. I think white and black are the best colors although I've had strikes on chart. yellow. White just seems to be the "green pumpkin" of buzzbaits. Clackers work sometimes, quiet gurgling works sometimes, squealers, ploppers, size, etc. I've seen where a 1/4oz would catch where 3/8 oz would not. I prefer the smaller 1/4oz because it seems to be more consistent in producing numbers.

I just looked at their selection....that 1/8oz red blade with a white/grey mixed skirt looks like an excellent clear water bait for pressured bass.  Heck it would work for stained too!  The red gets the reaction instinct of blood and injured baitfish while the skirt looks more realistic than just plain white.  I use a similar skirt fom a War Eagle spinnerbait and it's the only thing that works in clear water sometimes.

The Cavitron is a fine buzzbait.  My PB was caught on a 3/8 Bleeding Chartruese.  They really do get on plane fast and stay there with minimal effort.   8-)

I recently purchased a 1/4 ounce chartruse and white cavitron at dick's last week. I've fished it a 3 times and caught 3+ fish each outing. It is my favorite buzzbait by far.

I've used buzzbaits many times without the trailer but I missed a lot of fish.  I still miss some with a trailer.  It just depends on how big the fish is and how much they bite it.

If you fish dirty or stained water with bigger bass (like the one's you were catching), I'd try the 3/8oz too.  The 1/8oz might be too small for them.  I like 1/8oz because it will produce numbers because of it's size.  If it's just a matter of weight size and not overall size...it's a mute point.

Sounds like you had them dialed in that day.  I've tried a black buzzbait before and never seem to have much luck.  I haven't given up on them though.  Come to think of it, I haven't really tried it on the pond yet.  I guess I'll have to do that because that water is really dirty.  Black 3/8oz might be just the thing.

Thanks for the report RW, I've been eyeing these Cavitrons for a while now.  I know they are worth the money from what everyone else is saying.

i myself have caught my pb on the cavitron that bobby uhrig sent me on the 1st wave of give aways. these buzzbaits dont need a trailer hook. my pb was 15 lbs by the way. that cavitron i used was the 1/4 white with chartruse red hook for the bleeding buzzbait series. personally til i caught that 15 lber i never saw such an expolsion in my life. if you have a bad heart please dont purchase a cavitron i seriously think its that exciting.

I have been very pleased with the Cavitron buzzbait.  I have four of them and the all have notches on them.  

I wish Bobby all the luck, try one you won't be dissapointed!
