What knot are you guys using to tie new line to your spool. I bought my wife a whoopin' stick, LOL(she liked it because it is blue). Anyways, I need to spool line onto her reel and surprisingly, I can't find a thread as to what is the proper knot to tie when spooling new line onto a reel. Like I said, its silly but I couldnt find it anywhere and I just wanted to know the proper way to tie it on.

i think the proper knot is an arbor knot, but i just tie two overhand knots

I don't think it matters what knot is used to tie line to a spool. If a fish makes such a long run as to take all the line out, then that knot is gonna break, period, regardless of what kind it is.

Ah not so. My dad has had a 38" redfish take all the line out so the line was only attached by the knot. The knot held and he ended up landing the fish.

It might not be that big of deal when dealing with smaller fish like bass, but you never know...

Marty make a good point.

Black bass won't normally make long runs that make you worry about the knot at the other end of the line. For those of us that go for other species as well (stripers, striper hybrids, catfish, redfish, etc.) we do need to worry about that knot.

Looking at Marty's pic, it looks like he uses an improved clinch knot. It's the same knot I use at both ends of my line.

Yep, the arbor is the knot I use. I tie the end overhand knot first, then tie the other overhand, making a loop, then I put the whole loop over the spool and cinch it down. That's on spinning gear.  Baitcaster is a little more difficult.  Never had a fish take all my line.

Wow....that picture with all the line out is pretty amazing .  I can't believe that knot held.  I have always wondered what knot to tie to the spool, but just ended up tying overhands b/c I had the attitude that if they ripped that much line I was sc**wed anyways.  Might have to rethink that.
