Cephkiller Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I'm curious. What makes the Revos so much more popular than the previous generation of Abu LPs? Is it marketing, the fact that they look "sexier", or are they really that much functionally superior? Quote
Super User Raul Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 Originally I was an Abu fan Ceph, that was until I purchased a Torno. A friend of mine recently purchased a Revo S and let me fish with it a couple of hours, obviously I was skeptical about the new Abu reels but let me tell you, the Revo is a quantum leap from those s*ty previous generation Abu LPs. No they are not going to gain me as customer again, now the only question remaining is how long the new Revos are going to last. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 I'm curious. What makes the Revos so much more popular than the previous generation of Abu LPs? Is it marketing, the fact that they look "sexier", or are they really that much functionally superior? I have several Revo SX-HSs and love them. They seem to be very well made and are very smooth. The mag brake seems to work exceptionally well and I have far fewer backlashes than I've had with other reels. Compared to my Shimano Curado SF, they're ahead in performance and workmanship. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 Are you asking because you are thinking about buying one? I own a few of each and I bought them because of the reviews they were getting before they were officially released to the public. The brakes were superior, the drag is much stronger than other reels in its class and I have always been a Abu fan until the Torno's and the Eon's came out. They were obviously a weak attempt at low profile reels. I was just waiting for Abu to try low profiles again.....they did and I think they did a great job with the Revo line. Quote
Ballpark Frank Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I have never been a fan of LP baitcasters, I only use AG Rounds. I did however get the opportunity to fish with a friends Revo. I really like the reel. It was smooth, fast, and the braking system worked well to me. I am now considering a LP because of it. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 I'm a longtime Garcia guy but when I had to switch to LP's from round reels due to my hands, the previous line of LP reels from that company left a lot to be desired. It just seemed as though they were throwing something out there to appease the LP people. Not that their LP's were that bad but they certainly weren't designed or built in the same vein as the perenial favorite round reels. I'm still using a couple 2005LP's and a 3006 Torno that are several years old and in great shape both in appearance and function but they're not the same as my new Revo's. It's clear with the Revo's that they've spent the time and money to build a LP right. Quote
Super User .RM. Posted August 5, 2007 Super User Posted August 5, 2007 Cephkiller, I'm curious. What makes the Revos so much more popular than the previous generation of Abu LPs? Is it marketing, the fact that they look "sexier", or are they really that much functionally superior?Because they finally got it right. Less parts in the assembly means less parts to brake down. The reels are of a better design less is best. The Revo 1600 series reel is going to be a workhorse LP reel in the same way the rounds have always been. If one looks at the older schematics for the round reels and looks at the schematics for the Revo you will see a lot of similarities. The best part is that all of the new Revo's are basically the same internally. The main differences are the bearing counts and gear ratios (drive and pinion gears), all of the reels use the same set-plates..Just my .02¢ Tight Lines!!!! Quote
Taliesin Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Just my .02¢ This from the guy whose 2 cents is worth about $50. Quote

Cephkiller Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 Have you used one? Just a question No, I haven't. I was just curious. I've yet to feel the need to stray from Shimano. I have used some round Abus and I've been satisfied with them. Quote
RWHusker. Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I have 2 shimano curado's and 2 Revo's. I bought the 1st revo on the flea market cheap and gave it to my son. After using it as my back up plastics reel I fell in love and now just purchased the 2nd one to replace one of the curado's. GO BIG RED Quote
frogtog Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I can cast 6# test with ease on my Revo and that's a plus Quote
koko36265 Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I have the revo stx-hs and I love it... I have always been a fan of Garcia's round type reels and when these came out I had to get one.... first off it throws so easily.... I can throw a weightless zoom trick worm a pretty good piece with it, although I usually use spinning gear for that.. I have 40 pound braid on mine... The infinite bait controls lets you get exactly where you need to be so you can really sling those bigger baits also...... The drag is awesome.... I have caught a couple of 7+ pounders on it and can hardly tell I have them on.... If you are thinking of getting one I would say there is not another reel of this quality for these prices... I would say go for it.... Quote

I got rid of a Curado SF and bought a Revo SX-HS (and now own a couple). Never looked back. Love my Revos and All Star rods... Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 I'm glad you guys like your Revos and I hope they are the real deal. In about a year or two, we'll have something a little more concrete to work with and comment on. Reputation is everything to me. flechero and Raul, among others, have pointed out that Abu Garcia has produced GREAT reals in the past. However, in the recent past, when I owned a couple, it was not a part of that "high quality" period. Burn me once shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me. My last Ford was a 1976 Granada. Now Quality is Job #1, but back then Quality did not have a job. My last Abu Garcia was something built in the late 90's. We'll see. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 7, 2007 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 7, 2007 I have 3 of the high-end Revo's. They make my Chronarchs look ancient. They're awesome reels. Abu-Garcia has really stepped up to the plate on these, as I've owned a great many of their reels in the past to compare to. The Revo's are a whole new class compared to previous Garcia's. Caught my 8 and 9 pounders on Fork on the same reel. I owe that to the smooth drag. I'll be buying several more for sure! Quote

The Shimanos I've owned I hated - despite their cult following. I liked the Curado in the store, and it came highly recommended. But after a few fishing trips and I would have given it away. I felt it was cheaply made, had a silly disassembly procedure, and over priced. I owned 2 Cardiff's, too. Got rid of those and got a couple more Abu C4s - smooth reels you can't beat with a stick, and saved a few bucks ta boot. Quote

Super User Redlinerobert Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 You should try one. As far as I'm concerned it's Zillion, Revo, and Cronarch as far as quality. In that order. Quote
Super User Micro Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 I think Abu is going to be introducing the Revo Premier in the $250 range. Don't know when, though. Quote
d.hark Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Any particular model you guys are talking about? Cause doesnt Cabelas have the SC (I think thats it) for like $91 shipped?? Reguraly $129 plus shipping? Quote

Reguraly $129 plus shipping? The S is highly regarded, but I'm not a fan of its brake system (on any brand). The SC, SX and STX have mag brakes and they work very well. I think the $91 price on the SC is an incredible value. Quote

Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted August 7, 2007 Super User Posted August 7, 2007 I always used the Abu Garcia round reels, now due to some nerve damage I needed to go to an LP reel. This spring I got a Revo SX and now I'm throwing light baits with my Revo that I used to throw with spinning tackle. I was going to get another SX in the spring, but when I heard about the deal on the SC at Cabelas I couldn't pass it up. In another thread a while back, somebody refered to the Revos as "butter smooth". I'd have to agree, smooth operation and drag. Falcon Quote
Pond Hopper Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Love both of my Revos, the S and SX. I have the SC on the way and am actually looking forward to seeing what the lower level reels are like for my little brother, girlfriend, etc. And RW are you sure that saying isnt: "There's an old saying in Tennessee I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says, fool me once, shame on shame on you. Fool me you can't get fooled again." ;D Corey Quote
