Ok fellas, you have helped me out with a couple reel choices so far and they have worked out perfectly.

I am looking for something to throw spinnerbaits and buzzbaits from 3/8 to 3/4 oz a LOOOOOONG WAY. Right now I am using a Quantum Accurist 501ACX. It is working out fine, but I am considering upgrading to a reel that will be dedicated solely to thowing the spinner/buzzer.

Let's hear them.... :)

P.S. my pockets are still not quite deep enough for the top end stuff. ;D

Let me add that the model must be available in LEFT HAND

Having never owned a Shimano baitcaster, how easy is it to adjust the brakes?

With my Accurist, the VBS system is nice for windy condition adjustments and different weighted lures. How does the shimano compare?

Thanks RW

SPEEDBEAD,

Nice chatting with you on the land line.... :)

When you say a Loooong way, how far is a long way for you.

You do have to take into consideration the wind resistance of the baits.

Most any model reel should be able to cast a spinnerbait or buzzbait a decent distance, within reason, when properly setup and matched to the right rod...

Also if your in a boat move up on the target some, if bank bound and can move up on the target some, do so. To much distance with the wrong line, the reel won't matter you won't be able to set the hook anyway...

David, thanks for taking the time to discuss my reel on the phone. One of the more insightful lunch periods I have ever had    :)

Right now, I like to stay as far back as possible. I am going to the lake tomorrow and I will be able to give you a general distance once I measure it out.

What are you calling a decent distance?  And what rod specs do you consider ideal for spinner/buzzbaiting?

Thanks,

Wayne

SPEEDBEAD,

I would say 30' is a decent cast for buzz and spinner baits. I have done a lot of buzz and spinner baiting on 6'6" and 7' med to medium heavy fast tip rigs. I like to have the rod were the lure weight I am using, is in the middle of the rods lure ratings. I throw and slow roll a lot of 3/8oz to 1/2oz spinnerbaits, mostly 3/8oz buzzbaits. The further I try to cast spinner and buzz baits the less accurate the cast gets.

For river smallies and spinnerbaits and buzzbaits I use a Curado 200 and #12 line.

For green bass and lakes I use a Abu Garcia C3 and #14 to#17 line for spinnerbaits and a C4 and #20 line for buzzbaits. both of the Abu Garcia's cast a mile.
