The title says it all! I'm a poor college student and would like everyone's opinion on a good but inexpensive baitcaster, I recently had to sell off most my fishing gear for textbooks (  :'( ) but I saved enough for a decent rod and was looking for a matching reel.

Thanks in advance guys!

I noticed Pinnacle Solene's at Wally World for $48. I've had a Pinnacle Extant baitcaster for 3 years with no troubles at all (got it for around $50 at WalMart).  I think you can also pick up an Abu Garcia 5000 for around 50 bucks, a very reliable round reel...but...I'd probably roll the dice and go with the low profile Solene.

Of course if the Solene turns out to be junk, I'm going to come back and edit this post. :)

For that price, I'd look at something used in the for sale area here... or call Southwestern Parts and Service (in Dallas) and see what's in the reel counter. (the counter is where all the trade-ins and refurb reels go... I used to buy all my Abu 4600's from the counter for about 1/2 price.... a few scratches but warranted like new.)

These days, they are a service center for Shimano, Daiwa, Abu and a few others so the counter may now have a variety of brands to choose from... back when I bought there, it was Abu only.

I have bought a few remanufactured Abu 5000 reels for $20 a the berkely outlet stores.  They work great and last forever.   I still use 'em!!!

I have only had my Pinnacle for 1-1/2 seasons now, but I like it almost as much as my Curado.  I fish a fair amount, but this reel was recommended to me by a Bass tourney fisherman with a lot of time on his gear.  He's on his 3rd season with 2 pinnacles being his top two setups.  One is a jig outfit that he always uses, the other is a spinnerbait setup.  We've both been happy with them so far.  Now wether or not, they last 5 years or more is hard to say at this point, but we're happy campers so far.  He bought the $50 ones and I went for the $60 pinnacle with 1 or 2 more bearings.  I love it.  I can't comment on the Garcia's, although they sound like they have good support from several guys.  I tried one of the Bionic BPS combos and wasn't too impressed, but I was trying to cast light lure with Power Pro Braid on it too.  Just my .02 cents.

just check around locally at tackle shops and stuff or search ebay...always soemthing good on ebay.

I know this says $50 but I have the newest shimano cauis and I love it! The store I bought it from had an employee that said he used this reel up against the $250 shimano that are ridiculous and it performed just as good. The reel retails at $79.99 but I still recommend it.

Simon hasn't been to the site since 2014 but here's to hoping he graduated college, is making $250k a year, and has an arsenal of Metaniums and NRX's.

Dude, stay in school and the sacrifice you made will pay off in the future. I know, I did the same thing. back to the question, you can go with the Garcias, Shimanos and so forth, But why not try the new KastKings. A lot of buzz about them and if you are going fishing once or twice a month, go cheap and then upgrade when you are rolling on 24s. LOL

Why would you resurrect a 9-1/2 year old post?  OP might not even be fishing anymore, and if he is, I'm hoping that college education brings in enough money that he can spend more than $50 on a reel.  Now that I think about it, it is more than likely he married and can't afford $50 for a reel.........or his wife won't let him buy another one.
