basspro48 Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 I'm lookin for a new spinning rod and I am almost set on another Kistler but before I pull the trigger I want to know if anybody has any opinions on Gary Dobyns' new line of rods? They look sweet and the price isn't that bad for a rod of that caliber... Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted July 19, 2007 Super User Posted July 19, 2007 I have a 704C, and so far I've used it for jigs, C-rigs and smaller swimbaits. I've yet to hook a fish on it yet (DOH!), but I love the sensitivity and the balance. Quote
Super User senile1 Posted July 19, 2007 Super User Posted July 19, 2007 Gary Dobyns designed the Powell rods and, IMO, they are excellent rods and worth more than the price Powell asks for them (www.powellco.com). I suspect that the new Gary Dobyn's rods will be an improvement over the ones he designed for Powell. Triton_Mike just purchased some of these and can tell you much more about them. I'm buying a couple of his Powells that he was using. Quote
Triton_Mike Posted July 30, 2007 Posted July 30, 2007 Guys, I was on the Powell Prostaff before I went to Gary's Dobyns Rods Prostaff so I'm pretty familiar with both line of rods. The biggest noticeable difference between the Dobyns and Powell line of rods is the sensitivity as well as the balance of the Dobyns rod. Those 2 just jump right out within the first few casts. The single foot guides on the Dobyns rods are secured by a locking wrap and not just glue like most rods are. The warranty for Gary's rods is $20.00 and I believe Powells is $35.00. I also think the Dobyns rods are a sharper looking rod but that won't catch you anymore fish . Just my opinions after fishing both brands of rods. Mike Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted July 31, 2007 Super User Posted July 31, 2007 senile1 is right. Gary "one up'ed" himself with these rods. I have talked to him a couple of times over the last few weeks and I can tell you that you won't find a better guy than Gary. He knows his stuff and he understands the needs of those of us looking for the most bang for our buck. You won't be dissapointed with these rods. Quote
