Guest muddy Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Hey fellas, I saw on the favorite search bait thread a lot of guys picked jigs. I thought search baits cover a lot of water fast! I am new at jig fishing and have been mostly vertical jigging in water 8 to 12 feet deep and slowly at that. How do you use a jig as a search bait, i would like to try that? Quote
Super User Alpster Posted September 21, 2007 Super User Posted September 21, 2007 Hey fellas, I saw on the favorite search bait thread a lot of guys picked jigs. I thought search baits cover a lot of water fast! I am new at jig fishing and have been mostly vertical jigging in water 8 to 12 feet deep and slowly at that. How do you use a jig as a search bait, i would like to try that? Although I like to fan cast an area with a spinnerbait to cover it quickly, I can also cover a lot of water with a jig with short range pitching to stumps, stick-ups, under docks, etc. I just keep the boat moving and pitch to every fishy looking spot. Land the jig softly, let it sink to the bottom, hop it once or twice, reel it up and hit the next stump. Have caught some nice fish this way. Never thought of it as searching, but I guess that's what it is. LOL Ronnie Quote
Tokyo Tony Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 You could also swim the jig, using a SPRO toad or Horny Toad as a trailer. I've never really used this technique, but I've heard it's pretty good for the fall season especially. It does look really cool underwater. Quote
Super User Raul Posted September 21, 2007 Super User Posted September 21, 2007 Target fishing Muddy , one spot, a cast, 3-4 hops of the jig and reel in again to make another cast to the same target, do it 2-3 times, if no takers move to another target, you make it easier if you have a burner reel on your side. Another way would be by swimming the jig. But I still prefer a spinnerbait for search bait. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Like Raul said Target fishing. Fish the high percentage areas. What I mean is laydowns, brush piles, chunk rock, etc. Few casts to one and move. Play the percentages long enough and fast enough and it usually works out for a few fish. I dont do this often because I'm more of a slow fisherman. I like to cover a high percentage area in depth. I fish fast but slow if that makes any sence Quote
AJ Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 I usually start out fast, but fast does not always work. Then i go to a jig. I fish a lot of lakes with docks,so thats what I key on. If I catch a couple of good fish off a certain type of feature of a couple of docks I fish nothing but those features. In spring it is common to find big fish under the walkways,.in summer its usually toward the end posts of the deeper docks. Once you find where they are posistioned you can save alot of time that way. Quote
