Been away for a while.  Work and family been keeping me busy, and, getting in some fishing in the evenings instead of sitting in front of the computer love these long days/evenings.  Nice to sneak off to the pond with an hour of daylight left after the little one goes down.

Anyway, about a month ago I got me a little ultra light set up.  Had some gc's to Dick's sporting goods and bought a Pflueger ultra light set up.  Out of all the ultra lights they had, the Pflueger, IMHO, was by far the best and cheaper than most.  Got the 4-1/2' rod with the 4520GX combo.  Very smooth reel, appears to be well made and the rod felt good from both a balancing and sensitivity perspective.  Well, I have not been disappointed.  Put some 4lb spider wire on and have been having a blast!

Its opened up a whole new world for me.  Have caught a ton of Bluegill and LMBs on super beetles and small grubs.  Pulled in several 3 lb bass last weekend.  Now that was fun!  One, I snuck up on as I was walking around the edge of the pond.  Saw him swimming over a shallow flat.  Stood behind some brush and cast a weightless 3 plastic worm just to the side of him BAM! He clobbered that little worm.  Drag went crazy and he was pulling out as fast as I could reel in.  Finally got him and was a nice one.  Caught seven more in addition to him, including another one that might have went 3 lb, that afternoon.  Caught a Bluegill that fit in the palm of my hand amazing what those little guys will go after.

If you want to try something new, give the ultra lights a shot.  Obviously, do not recommend if you are fishing around a lot of junk, stick ups, limbs, docks, etc.  I had a nice one hooked a week ago that darted into some branches.  I wound up losing it because the light setup just did not have the backbone to keep him out.  But, around the edges where is fairly clear it is fun.  With the lighter lures you can drop them right on top of the bass without spooking them.

Don't do it near as much as I used to, but I've got a real old Shimano on an ultra light rod that I pull out every now and then for bream fishing. If bream got as big as bass, it would be Bream Fishing Resource ;)...

I too have discovered the joys of UL fishing. I use a 7' Okuma rod and a $30 abu Garcia 101a cardinal reel.  I love watching the rod absorb the shock of bigger fish as it bends along its curve to protect the light line. It is so cool. ;)

You're right guys - is a lot of fun.  I had NEVER used one until this one and it is a lot of fun.

Right on about that curve, IslandBass.  The big one I lost last week, the pole was almost in a "U" - those little Pfluegers are tough.  Really expected it to break, but it held tough.  See why a lot of people like Pflueger.

Hoping to get back out with it tomorrow.

i used to fish exclusively Ultra light, and was using 4 lb test

here is my suggestion, sont go overboard like i did

4 lb test is rediculous for bass, even small bass,. aand if their are hangups its even worse

i found that in the middle is the best

i got a shiumano sedona and love it, i use the highest test you can put on it, 8lb, and it is perfect

I bought a little 30 dollar Browning Ultralight rod/reel, and it is a ton of fun catching fish.  I currently have 4lb test on it, and it works pretty well.  The pond i fish with it in has very little junk in it so it works pretty well.  Did loose around a 3lb fish last week, because the fish snapped my line on the dock.

Have not done much UL Bass fishing, but here in the Cleveland area we do alot of Steelhead fishing in Lake Erie tribs with 13' Noodle Rods. (Buggy Whip's) It's not uncommon to land 15# Trout 0n 6# line with 4# leaders.

You hit the nail on the head with that "U" shaped curve.  8-)  I had gotten into a smallie/dropshot fix when I started this season, and I had completely forgotten about my ul rig. It's coming with me the next time out. Never caught a smallie on the ul rig. It should be awesome. ;)

Reading this post last week reminded me how much fun ultralight fishing is, so I decided to dust off my ultra light rod & take it to the pond across the street from my house. I usually don't fish there because the fish are all small. The largest one I have seen is about 2lbs. I had a ball, catching a 2 lb bass on an ultralight is not as much fun as catching a 10 pounder on heavier gear, but it is close.
