Hey, I just got a Shimano Stradic 2500, it has that little Port in which you can drop some lube or whatever it is they give to you with the reel. I was wondering how often you do that..

Also, My reel sounds a bit strange reeling it in, it's not completely quiet, makes a bit of a hum or something, is that normal?

The sound is normal.

As for the port, I'll defer to ReelMech.  I've never even removed that screw on my Stradics.

Brokejew,

No reel is completely quiet! I don't get it, are most anglers listing to their reels in a quiet room. When your out on the water is it totally quiet so that you can hear a pin drop. The noise you are hearing is the sound of the rotor spinning and the air moving through the bail wire and the two arms. It has absolutely nothing to do with the line roller not turning.

As for the lube port, that screw will be hard to remove, and you will probably bung it up doing so. The only thing it opens to is just above the spools oscillation worm gear and idler gear. It only take 2 drops of oil there to lube the reel. But I have seen where some anglers have squeezed a whole tube of quantum hot sauce grease in there and totally screwed the reel up.

Actually you shouldn't have to add anything to that reel (as far as lubrication) for about a full season..

From Shimanos web site on the Stradic page conserning S-Concept...

  • S-Concept represents Shimanos initial philosophy on which many of our spinning reels have been designed. The three basic ideas that are inherent in the S-Concept are Smooth, Silent and Strong.

So yes. Quiet. If you can hear the wind whipping through the bail wire as the loudest noise than i think they accomplished Silent. If you hear something louder you may want to check it out. The two drops of oil sound like a simple place to start.

I know all about the S-Concept I was trained by Daiwa® and Shimano®

The concern was....

My point is that the line roller doesn't HUM!!! The rotor when cranked at high speed will, because of the air moving through the bail wire and around the rotor itself.

Both of my Stradics have gotten smoother and quieter with each outing. I estimate that I make about 400 casts per weekend. When I get home at night I put one drop of Shimano oil in the port, one on the bail roller and I remove the handle and put one drop on each bearing.

FWIW, when I bought both reels, I could spin the handle and it would rotate around six times, now it's up to ten.
