Heavy Set Up

The bait monkey has convinced me that I need / want a heavy set up. My intended uses would be 1/2 oz plus jigs fished deep and double as a frog rod. The majority of the use would be the jigs.

I'm thinking about a St Croix Avid 7' Heavy Fast Rod paired with a Daiwa Fuego or Zillion (6.3:1) and 50 lb braid (power pro or suffix).

Just looking for opinions on this set up and alternate thoughts if I'm off base on this choice.

You could do better but not by much.

All equipment is rugged and hi quality without going overboard on price.

The St Croix/Daiwa set-ups you have in mind sound like good combinations.

I have a Revo STX sitting on a Kistler Helium HE70HC that I use for jigs and frogs. The Helium is extra sensitive, super-lightweight with plenty of backbone. Its a very versatile set-up.

I just purchased a 'true' flippin' rod, a bcfr894, and it is one of my go-to rods.  With a long, heavy action rod...weight is key.  Since you are considering higher-end rods, sensitivity is going to be there, but if it isn't light weight, you won't want to pick it up.  You don't need to spend $450, but I would handle several to see which one balances in your hand nicely.  Just food for thought...

I have a Dobyns 704C on order, H extra-fast rated for 1/4 - 1.  I'm planning on using it for frogs/toads, heavier jigs, C-rigs, heavier T-rigs and smaller swimbaits.

I already have 2 Revo STX's, so I'm debating whether I want to get another one for this rod or try something new, like a Zillion.

I also thought about the Avid, but since I already have 2 I wanted to try something new, and Dobyns has a pretty good name in the industry.

My heaviest rig is a G.Loomis GLX MBR844C/ Shimano CTE200GT.

This is a multi-purpose combination for me: striper rod, jig rod and now, small swimbait rod. I don't throw any lures or catch any fish that require heavier gear. The biggest freshwater fish I have ever caught (50- 100 lb gar) was boated with this rig.
