Fullwood Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 I have 2 Abu baitcasters and a spinning setup. I use the baitcasters for the heavier baits (spinner, crank, etc.) and the spinning setup for the weightless worms and some of the smaller topwater and divers. I live in FL and mainly fish Rivers for Bass instead of the lakes, and I love the wenching power of my baitcasters, (something you definitely need with fish here) yet really have a hard time fishing them in the skinny tributaries where the trees and brush overhang the water 10-15'. I almost bought another spinning reel, but what I'd like to have is a more "finesse" baitcaster setup that I can use for lighter worms and some of the Rapala lures that my Abu's can't quite throw without a quarterback's arm. I use Med action rods on my Abu's, is there a reel that might be able to handle the smaller lures without buying another spinning rig? Quote
brian_82 Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 The line you have on your BC will play a big role in what you are able to cast. Remember that the lure has to spin the spool in order to pull off line, vs a spinning reel only having to pull the line. If your using a smaller lure you may need to go to a smaller diameter line. RiskKid. Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 The Daiwa Sol is intended for lighter applications. Cabelas currently has them on sale in their bargain basement for $199 (regular price is $229) Quote
Fullwood Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 Thanks, Brian. I'm using 20lbs mono on my baitcaster, so you're probalby onto something there. I'll have to take that advice and put it with riskkid's and look into the Daiwa Sol with some small braid? Quote

30_pound_bass Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I like the BPS ProLite Finesse for the bass lures I use, mostly 1/4-ounce type stuff. I haven't tried it with weightless worms or anything super light, but small topwaters, sassy shads, and other baits are very easy to cast. I found this on sale for 70...if you don't want to drop 200 big bucks on a reel. Quote
Guest SkyChimp Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Abu RevoS Agreed! The Revo is the best reel to come along in a long time. I love my Revo SX's. Quote
jeepcrazy Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Not to further muddy the water, but my Curado 101D does a great job casting weightless plastics. Better than my Sol, actually. I bought the Sol to improve on my performance I was getting with the Curado and the Curado still gets the call when I want to fish finesse with my baitcaster. (Although I usually fish frogs with it) Quote
Fullwood Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 Well I could only pick one, unfortunately, so I went with the Daiwa SOL to give it a shot. Those are rated for 12lbs test, so would I be able to get away with a 15-20lbs small braid with no problems, or should I stick with a 12lbs braid as the reel says? I think I'll put it on a Med-fast 7' rod and see how she works out. Quote
