Red Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 first off this question is about rod power and action and length, not about a particular brand name or anything like that.... i have 2 set ups as of now...6' MH with abu 5501 spooled with 12lb XT...i use this mainly for all worm applications, jigs, c-rig etc etc next is a 6'6" M with abu 5501 spooled with 8lb XT...i use this for cranks, topwaters, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits etc etc i have 2 abu cardinal 101 spinning reels at home with no rods for them...both are spooled with 8lb XT....i would like to purchase 2 rods to expand my arsenal and cut down on having to cut and retie so often when i am fishing. what would you recommend for this? maybe the same rods i have on the casting reels but spinning? what would be a good rod for topwaters? idealy i would like to have tied on at all times....t-rig, weightless worm, topwater, spinnerbait/crank....i feel i can work a topwater better with a spinning rod....any help you can offer is much appreciated! thanks Cliff Quote
surfer Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 This should answer part of your question. I know it will do better than I can. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141187546 Quote
Super User Alpster Posted June 8, 2007 Super User Posted June 8, 2007 You may want to consider a shorter 5' 6" medium rod. Especially if you do any bank fishing where back casting is a problem. Just a thought. Ronnie Quote
Super User islandbass Posted June 8, 2007 Super User Posted June 8, 2007 You can get yourself a drop shot set up and an ultralight or light set up. I also have a 101 abu spinning and I use it with my 7' Okuma Celilo Light action set up. It is rated for 2-6# test and has a 1/32 - 3/8 oz lure weight range. I use it for tossing light and ultralight weights. It is a blast to fish with and the reel is spooled with 6# trilene XL. Talk about fun! Quote
Red Posted June 9, 2007 Author Posted June 9, 2007 You may want to consider a shorter 5' 6" medium rod. Especially if you do any bank fishing where back casting is a problem. Just a thought.Ronnie i was thinkin that might be a good idea after the last couple nights fishing....trying to "walk the dog" from shore with a 6'6" rod proves to be difficult....it is hard to get the downward snaps when your standing almost level with the water....and having tall grass and such in the area....so i am thinking a 5'6" M for top waters and a 7' M for cranks and spinnerbaits....then i can use the rods i have currently (M and MH) for t-rigs/jigs and weightless applications...also one of these spinning rigs will be used by my wife when she goes with me...thanks for the input guys, really helped alot! kms399 Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 i would get a 6'6 med heavy for skipping plastics under docks and a 7' med for topwater and cranks. Quote
phase5supply Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 I agree with Kms you need a 6'6 mh fast, a 7' rod would be nice, but if you are in more need of a short rod for bank fishing then a 5'6 ( 15 years ago I would only buy 5'6 a 6' rods just seemed to long ). I just bought a 6' MM rod I have not put a reel on it yet but I stuck it in the rod rack, it looks so short beside all my other rods, WOW how thing change Quote
Red Posted June 10, 2007 Author Posted June 10, 2007 well i got a 5'6" light rod and put my older cardinal on it and gave it to the wife....she mainly bobber fishes so i will just call that one hers....for me i got a 7' M but after getting to the lake we realized it had a bad tip....so i took it back this morning and got a 6' MH....so for me i now have 3 set ups...they go like this..... 6'6" M Casting-Cranks/spinnerbaits 6' MH Casting-t-rigs/jigs 6' MH Spinning-weightless/light applications/topwaters now i know i said avove this wasnt about rod brands or anything, but since i got a different one this morning i wanted to ask if anyone had any experience with them...all my rods(including the wifes) are berkley cherrywoods, but the MH spinning rod i got this morning is a berkley bionix rod...this was a big upgade for me, at least in price($20 cherrywoods, $50 bionix)...i went to a different walmart and found them tucked away in the corner..it feels really nice and has a really stiff feel, which i like...after i fish with it and if i like it i may upgrade the cherrywoods to these bionix rods...so has anyone used the berkley bionx rod? Thanks Cliff Quote
