Super User Root beer Posted June 5, 2007 Super User Posted June 5, 2007 Hey fellas, for my 18th birthday this november or for christmas I thought about getting my self a custom rod with split grip handle and spiral guides. I was wondering if anyone has a spiral guide and how they like it? I'm get it custom made from a rod company havn't decide on which yet. Is spiral guide just like casting/pitching a spinning rod? Thanks for any information on it. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 5, 2007 Super User Posted June 5, 2007 Kew, it ain 't spiral guides, it 's spiral wrapped guides . Check out ReelMech 's website, there 's a lot of information on that subject. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted June 5, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 5, 2007 so what is reelmech's website? Quote
Super User flechero Posted June 5, 2007 Super User Posted June 5, 2007 A custom rod would be much better than ANYTHING I got for my 18th B-day! I'll caution you this about spiral wraps... once you have one, all your other rods will become 2nd class. I had to replace all my rods once I had the 1st spiral. A spiral will greatly reduce the fatigue and torque, is less likely to break, will fish better since a builder actually static tested for guide placement and fit each component by hand. Add to that, you get to help design and pick out any and every detail... Depending on what kind of rod you want could influence who you get to build it. Give us a run down of what you think you want and we can make some recommendations. ReelMech's rod site: http://www.rod-crafting.com/ Search in the tacklemaking and rod sections here... there have been many threads on spirals and custom rods. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted June 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 6, 2007 There was a guy I know name chad whiting one of pro-am anglers told me he got his sprial wraps from bobs custom tackle. He said bob will let you pick blanks you want, type of guides, etc. I figure I'd get a kistler blank with split grips (like cork on top, cork on bottom and blank in middle, with spiral wrap guides. I just dont know what kind of guide like fuji, or tititium or whatever. What you guys think? thanks for the link, i'm read around about it. I plan to use this setup for shaky head. I might buy a daiwa sol for it or another free floating spool reel. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 kwchannell89, I figure I'd get a kistler blank with split grips (like cork on top, cork on bottom and blank in middle, with spiral wrap guides.First lets clarify. You won't be getting a Kistler® blank (they don't make their own blanks). But you can custom order Kistler® rods with split grips and high end guides, but I doubt they will take the time to setup a spiral wrapped system for you. I just dont know what kind of guide like fuji, or tititium or whateverFuji® is a very old and well respected brand name for guides, while Titanium, (SiC) Silicon Carbide, Aluminum Oxide, etc, are a few of many materials that guides are made from. There is a ton of reading you will need to do before you actually take the step up to a custom setup. You will need to know exactly what reel you plan to use, what the preferred balance point will be, the preferred length of the rod, the intended technique you plan on covering (there are actually no general purpose custom rods), plus many more issues that need to be taken into account. Good Luck In Your Research... Tight Lines!!! Quote
lubina Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 That is my next project....I'll love to have an spiral wrap. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted June 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 6, 2007 reelmech, A custom company told me he gets his blank material from same dealer that supplies kistler. So either your wrong or he just trying to make a sale. I thought just ordering some kistler rods, but I want at least one spiral wraps. Then I'd start buying kistlers. Quote

ReelMech said Kistler DOES NOT MAKE their own blanks, just as YOU have stated. Quote

Kistler buys pre made blanks from another company.... and Trey (Kistler) will not confirm the source. So my guess is that your builder just uses Batson blanks (as it's widely speculated that Kistler uses Batson blanks) and is trying to steer you in the direction of his custom vs. a Kistler. He said bob will let you pick blanks you want, type of guides, etc. Any custom builder will do those things and much more. Quote

Pretty harsh statement from someone seeking info from knowledgeable sources such as ReelMech and Flechero. Read what RW posted and check yourself a little bit.....dang. Wayne Quote
Super User Root beer Posted June 6, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 6, 2007 Ok, I re-read my first post. Now I see how your confused, I meant to say in my original post that I want same blank as kistler, not one that kistler makes. It was said wrong. All I'm saying is a guy told me the blanks are from same as kistler, even the loomis blanks are same as loomis blanks, etc. But hey what do I know? I'm just saying what I've been told. Here I am just checking to see who right and who wrong. Who knows maybe the guy actually has same blanks as kistler, his rod are same price as kistler graphite rods. Well actually some of his models are 10 bucks cheaper. But some are same price as kistler graphite. Quote
