my normal line of choice for a few yeary now has been fireline smoke 10 lb and 8 lb. i just got a few new spools from bps and it doesnt seem to have any strength. i cast a WIEGHTLESS 5in senko on a #4 hook, and just the casting stress broke the line. >:) it was fresh line that had never been used. :) it was not the knot because i could see a few feet of my line trailing in the distance, as my last senko went flying away to that place where all things are lost and never found. :( then yesterday i lost my favorite pop-r as a small bass hit it. i never even felt a tug on the line before my popr was gone. :'( line blowin in the wind................ whats up with the fireline......... i may have to switch to power pro

I may have to switch to power pro

Why do you make it sound like punishment.

You have given Berkley Fireline a much longer trial period than most fishermen.

My experiences with Fireline are what caused me to stumble onto Power Pro a few years ago.

I hear a lot of people don't like Fireline but so far I have had good luck with it. As a matter of fact I really like it. I don't know if I just got lucky and got a good batch or what. I got mine at Wal- Mart and haven't had any problems.

There are too many line options available to continue "testing" one that has failed. Here are a few suggestions:

Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft

Yo-Zuri Hybrid orginal formula

P-Line CXX or Premium CX

Sunline Defier

Trilene XL (XT for baitcasters)

Maxima

(Also, Mean Green and Cajun Red Cast are recommended by some of our members, but I have never used them)

If it's braid you want:

Power Pro

Suffix

Fireline is not on my list.

This is my 4th season using 14# Fireline on spinning equipment and I have been mostly pleased. It's never broken, has shown a lot of strength, and has been incredibly abrasion resistant to grass and wood. My only complaint is that it doesn't flow off the spool as smoothly as I'd like, so it doesn't cast quite as far as I'd prefer.

I tried two spools of Fireline last year and both were terrible.  I tried it on both spinning reels and a baitcaster.  It worked well for about 2 hours of use and then the line started to break and seperate.  I can understand one bad spool but two from two different stores.  I will not using it again.  I'm going to stay with PowerPro and Sufix.

I took RW's advice and tried Yo-Zuri ultra soft 6# and am going to switch all my reels to it. Yesterday was the fist time using it and after a multitude of casts and catches I didn't have the first problem. This stuff casts great and seems to be very strong. I ordered 4# and 10# also. This is the best line I've ever tried, thanks RW.

I hate fireline and it seems to get worse! How many bad spools can be out there? This is just one of a few posts about fireline breaking and I don't get it why people use this crap! Every time you buy a spool of fireline you might get a bad spool (or maybe it just sucks) and that's a gamble to me!

I use power pro, tuffline and silver thread and in never got one of those famous "bad spools". I bought fireline once and they just happend to be 2 bad spools (pink and smoke). Bad spools, no, bad line, yes! :)

When I first tried braid in early 2006 I used 20lb smoke fireline and I had the exact same experience (the line snapping in mid-cast). By talking with other local anglers who used braid I discovered that a whole batch of 20lb smoke fireline imported at that time had the same problem.

I did use fireline again and again though and since then I did not have any problems in either smoke, pink, or crystal. I have to admit that I now use almost solely powerpro because I prefer its handling characteristics, but I went through several spools of firelines since that initial attempt and never had any breakage problems.

To hear though that such incidents still occur 16 months later, it means that Berkley should check their production standards...

I would love to try Yo-Zuri, if only I could find a local store that sells it.  Academy and BPS don't carry it.

In an effort to keep this thread "fair and balanced"... I've been fishing with Fireline since it was first introduced and have used dozens of spools.  I've used it with spinning tackle in 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10lb test.  I've used it with bait casting tackle in 10, 14, and 20lb test.  I've used smoke, flame green and crystal.  I've fished it with mono/fluoro leads and without.  Some of it stayed on reels for several years other spools of it got changed within a year because I wanted to try a new version.  The only times I've had any of it break during a cast was at the end of a backlash.

Why I like it... It has more "passive" memory or body than other braids I've tried and this trait makes it fish more like a very soft mono.  No wind knots around the rod tip and it behaves better on both spinning and baitcasting spools.  These are my preferences... yours may be different, but that fact doesn't mean the product is defective.

I think a lot of people use braid, fireline with heavy ACTION rods lots don't no if u switch to med or med light rods it is easier on the braid and the reel and u have less break-offs another forum i read the guys swear by fireline for surf-fishing

I've never had a problem with Fireline. In my experience, most of the people who have spooled up and expected it to work the same as mono which, of course, it won't. I blame marketing at Berkley for that..: "The superline that handles like mono.." Yeah, right, small diameter, no stretch, just like mono. ::)

And yes, it isn't braided, it's fused of the same type of material as some braids.

If I got a spool that puked like that, I would demand a refund, but it has never happened to me.

I never bought a bad spool of Spiderwire Fusion either, and EVERYONE called that crap.

Anyone remember it? Nope? Ah, well.

i went from fire line (total crap) to spider wire stealth and it was the best decision i ever made try it youll love it

I just switched to fireline here recently i started with a spool of 10 pound line on 2 spinning reels. I have about 20-30 yards of monofilament then put on the fireline, i wet all my knots and always keep an eye on my line for fraying and bad spots since i'm fairly new to it. So far it has out performed my old line i can cast 2 times further, i can feel everything and it's very sensitive and I HAVE NOT HAD one knot break. I pulled up half a tree the other day which i was very impressed with. The only thing i dislike about the fireline is how it buries itself if you set the hook hard and it just turns out to be a log or rock. I decided to get another spool of 14 and put it on 2 baitcasters and give it a shot.

Do not blame fire line...blame who you bought it from. In my experience all of the braided lines have a "shelf life" as it were. The deteriorate with time and moisture...

if I had to take a wild guess...I would say where ever you bought it from sold you last years or the year before line that was stored in too humid of conditions.

I found a two year old roll of power pro in my shed that had fallen down behind a shelf...the stuff was just falling apart. I could break it between my fingers. The guy at our bait shop says that is common and it is why they do not stock braided in huge quantities ( so the stock is "fresh" he says) and why they throw away or d**n near give away the braided at the end of the season.
