Spooling a Baitcaster

Is there a special way to attach the line to the spool on a baitcaster before you start spooling or does it matter. It's my first one, I know it's another rookie question.

Nothing special, just a standard Arbor Knot unless you are spooling braid. In that case you need to put on some monofilament backing, ten yards is plenty.

Just attach the line with an arbor knot.  You want to make sure the line comes off the top of the filling spool as it faces your reel.  You'll also notice the line from the filler spool has a natural curve to it from being on the spool.  You should make that your tag end when you tie your knot and that way you're not going "against the grain" of the line as it sits on the spool.

Roadwarrior:  With braid, your saying you need to tie 10 yards of mono directly to the spool with an arbor knot, then tie the braid to the mono line using a uni-knot?

Yes.

Braid will slip on the spool. The backing "grabs" the spool. With so little backing you will never feel the knot buried deep in the line. It's no big deal and when you replace your primary line, the braid, you never need to replace the backing.

Cool!....Do you use a uniknot to tie the lines together?  Or is there another type of knot?

Yeah the Uni-KNot is usually the knot used to attach two different lines.

Another tip on smaller capacity spools that you want to load braided line on. Instead of a backing of mono use a small strip of double-back carpet type tape and use the Arbor knot and the line won't spin on the spool.

I'm sorry but I have a really dumb question.  On the knot link above it only shows the uniknot if you have an eyelet on one end.  Do you just fold over the mono side to create an eyelet or am i missing something?

i just lined my baitcaster, i used monofilament backing and the braided line 20lb stealth spiderwire and it appears to have a minor twist in the line :-/ this has never happened to me with braided line and I spooled it correctly  by reeling on the line with someone holding the spool facing me with a screwdriver and the line coming off the top of the spool... is this minor twist just caused from being new line that just needs to be wet and used a few times? that's my guess, I wasn't able to try it out yet as I had to leave for work but it's just bothering me hereat work as I can't mess with it.
