jeronimo Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 what hook should i use for a drop-shot rig? i have never tried one yet. Quote
Land Surveyor13 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I have been using the mosquito hook by Owner until a few weeks ago and I picked up a couple packages of the there down shot offset hook. I prefer the down shot offset hook over the mosquito hook because it gives you more hook to work with. Quote
basspro48 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I use the same offset hooks that I would use with any other techniques. I just take a look at the size of the worm I am going to use and match the hook size to that, a 4" worm would require a 1/0 hook and a 6" worm would take a 2/0 etc. Quote

Super User fourbizz Posted September 4, 2007 Super User Posted September 4, 2007 Owner Mosquitos, Owner Mosquitos, or Owner Mosquitos. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted September 5, 2007 Super User Posted September 5, 2007 I used to use the Gammy split shot drop shot hooks and they are excellent, but the Mossuito hooks are a bit cheaper adn come with more hooks. I have been using the latter for most of this season and I think I like them more than the gammies. Size 2 or 4 from both companies. Oh yeah. If I need to T-rig my bait then the Owner down shot hook (not sure of the name but it looks like a mini ewg) is my hook of choice. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 I use the gamakatsu drop shot hooks most of the time, if weeds are thick enough to be a nuisence with those exposed hooks, I use a small #1 or 1/0 EWG and "t-rig" the bait Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted September 6, 2007 Super User Posted September 6, 2007 I have used the mosquito hooks, and the splitshot/dropshot hooks and they are good but I recently started useing small circle hooks and my hookup rate has gone way up. I can't stand the standout hooks. They are to big and when I am trying to entice pressured bass I don't wan't them to see the hook. With any hook just be sure to remember that you don't need to set the hook hard just start reeling and bring your rod tight. Quote
cbfishalot Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Owner mosquito hooks if i'm nose hooking he bait and the owner dropshot or rebarb if i'm rigging it weedless. Quote
StandOut Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Stand out hookhttp://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58058_100010002_100000000_100010000_100-10-2 Dang at least you could have sent them to the "inventor's" and Bassresource Sponsor's web site to see and buy them http://ezknot.com/SUHooks.html I don't drop shot anymore, it's obsolete (much less effective than my new technique) Although my new technique is rigged sorta like a drop shot You can't get this type of action out any drop shot rig. Of course iif I want just a little action, I can just use a little less rod tip control http://ezknot.com/Storm3.wmv http://ezknot.com/8inchworm.wmv This is the rig I now use exclusively with soft plastics , it works with any size lure, and replaces drop shotting, Texas, and Carolina rigging, as it gives you total lure action control. Here is how this rig is rigged To learn more about it,, there is a lot of information you need to read and see, go to this site http://ezknot.com/Long_Shot.html If you still want to just drop shot, use the best drop shot hook, the only hook in the world that was engineered just for drop shot fishing, that any knot will make it stick straight out, ALWAYS, even after you fight your fish,, plus you can drop shot huge lures with the new 2/0 StandOuts,, you don't have to worry about trying to wedge your knot in the hook eye,, something you can't do with light line and huge hooks, that's why no one was drop shotting with big lures, they couldn't get their hooks to do-right With the Wiggle rig I don't worry about the hook sticking out,, If i miss the strike, they will hit it again,, and again, and again. SO I rig my lures totally weedless, plus I want the hook to pivot on this rig,, it makes for a more natural action Quote
huskyjerk Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 I agree with fourbizzle, but sometimes I use the Owner Mosquito ;D Quote
schreecher Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Look into these hooks for dropshot.... they are Gamakatsu (good), they are strong (good) they are cheap (25 for 5 dollars), and they catch fish (good!) Now, the largest size is a number 2, but it has been fine for me, as I have been dropshotting with them for over 5 years. They are called Glo-Bug hooks. Look them up, and yuo will find one of the best drop shot hooks around.... Quote
Bass1 Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Stand out hookhttp://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_58058_100010002_100000000_100010000_100-10-2 I've tried this hook a few years ago and I lose a lot of fish because the hook was not sharp enough. I don't know if they have improved through the years. If they did I would like to try it again because it really does help in hook positioning. Currently I use Gamakatsu circle hooks for dropshotting and I have no problems with it. The hook points are very sharp. Quote
