xxmurrxx Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Hi, I recently bought a baitcast setup for crankbaits and other lures. Im using a $20 rod and reel combo for my soft plastic fishing... My problem is that my line keeps getting tangled up when im reeling the slack off my line or when fishing weightless baits. Not too sure if this is my line or reel, but im sure I could use a new reel either way. Im not looking for a really expensive reel, just something decent around $50 or lower. I was looking at this one at a local store, looked pretty good but im not too sure if it will be good for what i want. http://www.quantumfishing.com/fwreels/array_spinning.html Any input on picking a good reel, or suggestions on a good model would be apreciated. Thanks. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 23, 2007 Super User Posted May 23, 2007 I suggest you put a little more with that $50 and get a Shimano Symmetry. It has a true ball bearing in the roller assembly and keeps that line from twisting like it does with cheaper reels. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Go with a number 35 or 40 Pflueger Trion 40 bucks and you get 10 back for more plastics Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I'd spend the extra $10 and get a pflueger president. They have more than proved themselves over the last few yrs. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 ah do the math as you say LBH the President is 5999 60 bucks Quote

Sounds like your line isn't soft enough for weightless/slack line presentations. As for a new reel that's up to you and your budget. Good luck and Tight Lines!!! Quote
brian_82 Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 As suggested maybe you just need to try some new line. Something else you may want to look at is the speed ratio of your current reel. Depending on your fishing method that could be causing problems too, you may possibly need a faster reel to keep up with that slack. Quote
GAcraw22 Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 Shimano Sedona 2500 .. Great Reel at a price of about $40.00-50.00. Brent Calhoun, GA Quote

Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 The President is my favorite spinning reel. The Sherrif gave me a Shimano Stradic, which i am grateful for . I have one spinning rod, I use it for pond fishing, THE PRESIDENT is going back on it. The president is smoother and has a better drag in my opinion the Pflueger President is the best value for the bucks when it comes to spinning reels ;D Quote

Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted May 24, 2007 Super User Posted May 24, 2007 Another vote for the Symetre, but the more I hear about the Presidents, the more I think I want one. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 OH OH You better watch it Speedbead the Sherrif may dispense that Alpster guy to take care of any dissenters Quote
Guest avid Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I never tried the Pflueger president so I can't comment directly. I can say that are a long established company with a good reputaion for making excellent products at reasoable prices. But, I consider the Shimano Symetre to be an outstanding spinning reel. Notice I didn't say 'for the price" It's a great reel. the fact that it cost $80.00 makes it the value king IMO. PS. Untill you get your new reel, I would ; a. switch to a soft line. Trilene xl can be got at wally world and is a good choice b. Manually close the bail. Meaning don't use turning the handle to snap the bail closed, use your left hand. c. Every so often, or at the FIRST SIGN of line twist, cut off any terminal tackle and just pay out line behind the boat or into the current. This is the absolute best way to easily remove twists in your line and prevent those gobs of mono from ruining your day. Quote
xxmurrxx Posted May 24, 2007 Author Posted May 24, 2007 Thanks for the suggestions, Picked up a Symetre today. Quote
