Knots for Fluorocarbon line

I keep breaking off right at the knot whith fluorocarbon line when I am setting the hook. Is there a special way to tie this line?? I am useing a palomar knot currently.

I also get line twist terrible with fluorocarbon. Is there anything besides swivels that will help this??

I actually had the same problem. I have fished with mono line for years now and hadn't had my line break because of the knot in 4-5 years or so. I started using 14lb. Berkley Vanish Flourocarbon line this year and had the knot slip once while setting the hook. I always used a trilene knot but after I had that happen I have used a Palomar knot for my flourocarbon line and braided lines and I haven't had the knot slip once. I have caught a couple 4 lbers and multiple 2-3 lbers using the Palomar knot with no problem. I would suggest taking extra time tying knots with flourocarbon. Really take your time and make sure the knot is neat and looks perfect. If it has a defect retie it. Also, wet your line a few times during the knot tying process. I do it about 2-3 times while tying and cinching down the knot. I have done this recently and have had no problems at all with the knot slipping.

I use a modified San Diego Jam for all types of lines including fluro.

I use 10 lb fluoro and use a palomar...my line hardly ever breaks at the knot. I am anal and I always feel up and down my line and make sure the knot is snug. My buddies line broke at the knot last night and I told him he has to make sure it is perfect. I have drugged out trees with that knot. I also am a firm believer in soaking my knot right before I tighten it.

The key to getting a good knot in flurocarbon line is to wet it completely and cinch it down slowly. I mean s-l-o-w-l-y. Friction generated heat is the enemy.

Take your time and inspect every knot and your problems will vanish.

i use 6lb fluoro and we all use the uniknot around here . it always cinches very clean. when tieing a kink or burn in fluoro and it becomes worthless. always wet it in your mouth before cinching. that the key to any knot with fluoro. the uniknot always comes out pretty. Ps if the learn the uniknot pull the tag first the pull the main line and it cinches down, and always wet it.

Many pro's will tell you that the palomar knot is the worst knot you can use with fluorocarbon. I have never had a problem with the knot and breaking off using the line. What fluorocarbon are you using? There was a fluorocarbon line test posted a while back that talks about the best fluo for a palomar knot. I also posted a thread about a artical that said that it was the worst knot to use with flou.

I personally have had some bad luck with Flurocarbon lines but using a braided knot has improved things greatly.

I've been fishing with Seaguar's Carbon Pro fluro for about 10 years now.  I always use a Crawford Knot.   I wet the knot but I don't spit on it.  Before I cinch it down slow and tight, I drop the bait and knot into the water that's all around me and then I tighten it.

boy what a sore subject!! i'm new to the sport, one year to be exact. so obviously i still have a couple millions things to learn. however the things i concentrate on are the things i have control of. i do alot of research on products pertaining to the sport. when it comes to knots for flor. lines i have read that the palomar was not a good choice, but the reason is controlable by you.

i use 30lb power pro with 20lb. berkely flor. leader. the uni to uni has proven to be flawless with me. but i'm mad at the r&d dept. at berkely. they recommended their knot for their flor. lines. two days ago, for the third time their knot slipped on me when the set was made. it was one heck of a thump and i'm still mad. anyways went back to the palomar knot and landed a 7. 5oz that evening on top water.

its not the palomar thats not a good knot. its when the line crosses on the hook's eye that causes the line to break. so just a little patience to inspect your knot and the reward could be awsome.

Palomar will work fine....just make sure you dont kink the line when tying your knot, always check for kinks, if line gets kinked above the knot by hook,wt, or lure, its gonna break.....as some say, nature of the beast......Most flouro is a pain on spinning gear compared to casting...all spinning gear is going to cause line-twist...

Just to let every one know I have still been useing the palomar knot, but i have been tieing and inspecting very carefully and it has worked GREAT!!  Takeing my time and making sure that my knot is very wet and watching so I don't burn the line worked for me..  Last sunday I caught at least 15 fish and three of them were over three pounds, never had a problem!!

I use the Palomar know about 99% of the time and have not had it fail with mono, braid or flurocarbon. You mentioned you use Vanish. I think that may be part of your problem (IMO). Let me say next that I am a HUGE Brekley fan but what I have experienced is that Vanish over the last year and a half, especially the Transition, is VERY brittle!!!!!!!!!!!  I won't have Vanish on any reel EVER again! On a handfull of the crystal clear lakes I've fished and need to use a flurocarbon I'm planning on using BSP XPS fluro. I was at a seminar earlier in the year and got to see/hear and talk to Marty Stone. Let me add here, and I quote, that Marty does NOT have a line sponsor. He suggested two differnet fluro's and one of them was BPS' XPS (can't remember what the other was but I do remember it was somewhere around $30 a spool).
