LAO162 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I'm already thinking about next year's purchases... When it's time to get a new BC reel, is there an advantage to purchasing a factory "Super Tuned" reel versus a standard version that has been custom tuned. For instance, the DAIWA Advantage - currently $69.95, or $99.95 Super-Tuned at Cabelas. Thanks! Leon Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I custom tune them myself it is very easy The first time you use it drop it onto the floor of the boat it really frees things up WORKS FOR ME Quote
LAO162 Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Thanks Muddy, I fish from shore so I don't have a hard surface to work with. Maybe I'll drop it on the beach so I can sand down those friction points. Then, I'll drop again in the muck to lube the bearings etc ;D Quote
Super User Raul Posted May 22, 2007 Super User Posted May 22, 2007 Factory tuned is the cheapest way to get a tuned reel, for less money you get all the goodies. The price difference between the regular TDX and the TDX super tuned is only 10 dollars and it 's a much better reel in performance and looks. For example in both reels you are mentioning, without thinking it much I would go for the super tuned Advantage, it has a 30 dollars discount at that price, the MSRP of that reel is 130 dollars. Guest DavidGreen Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Actually Super Tuned (ST) is the same as (SF) Super Free. The pinion gear is supported with a bearing pack at the base were it intersects with the spool shaft and engagement T, this keeps the pinion from laying down on the spool shaft thus reducing the friction that can occur from the miss-alignment especially with the use of the ported light weight spools used today. Custom super tuning is nothing more than polishing of all the free spool friction points in the shim, spool shaft, and inside of the pinion gear areas on older reels with non-supported pinion gears. Either way it is suppose to help with the spools highest rotation speed, and length that the spools turns at the highest rate, helping in casting distance. Many service shops do the custom jobs at a 20.00 per reel rate, I do it as an included step in my servicing at no additional rate. Tight Lines All!!! Quote
LAO162 Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Thanks Reel Mech, I had you in mind when I was thinking custom. Assuming I keep making progress with my casting, I've been considering sending my Curado 200B for service & maybe even upgraded bearings once the season is over. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted May 22, 2007 Super User Posted May 22, 2007 I have recently got a TDA 150P and a TDA 153HST(super tuned) ... for what it's worth I can't tell a difference between the two. I do however like the looks/finish and the line capcity better on the super-tuned. Quote
