Super User Chris at Tech Posted May 19, 2007 Super User Posted May 19, 2007 I bought a 7'6" MH BPS crankin stick today since they were on sale for $30, and I want to learn to throw deep cranks better So with that said, anyone have a recommendation for a cheapish (under $100) cranking reel? I was thinking about a Abu 4601C3, but for a 5.x:1 ratio reel, it brings in 25 ipt. I thought that may be a bit fast, but I wasn't sure. Anyone have any suggestions for a reel to throw 10-16 ft cranks that's available in left hand retrieve? Is the 4601C3 a good choice here? Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Of course my #1 Choice Trion Low Profile in the 5.3:1 Ratio at 100 bucks even 2nd BPS Fritts Craning reel a little less and frequently go on sale Quote
flyphisher # Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Team Daiwa Advantage 150p. $99.99. Had it for 2 years and it hasnt missed a beat. Smooth. well engineered. For true deep cranking, you may want to look at some of the round Abu garcia's with the 4:3:1 ratio, I think....according to a cranking expert I know, the gears dont hold up in other reels like they do the Abu's....should be able to find one on ebay. Super User 5bass Posted May 20, 2007 Super User Posted May 20, 2007 I fish deep cranks ALOT.....its actually my favorite way to catch 'em. The past few years I've been using the Fritts BPS 4.7:1. Its got the wider handle and the "slop" gears which helps on a deep crank hook-up. Obviously the slower gear ratio helps tremendously with the fatigue factor that comes into play when throwing the deep cranks. If you buy a slow gear crankin' reel, the retrieve will feel a little weird at first but dont give up on it.....stick with it at least until you catch a few fish with it. I know some people who throw deep cranks dont like that slow of a reel but way back when I switched to the slow gears, my catch rate went up instantly and I'll never go faster than the 4.7:1 again for a deep crank reel. It's almost time to start the serious deep crankin'.....you better get something quick! Let us know what you decide on. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted May 20, 2007 Super User Posted May 20, 2007 I've got old Garcia Ultra Mag XL plus reels on all my crank sticks. They cast a country mile, have a 4.7:1 gear ratio and can be had in like new condition on Ebay for $60-80. Quote
Preacher19 Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 I have an Abu 4600 c3 and love it. My main crank reel. Quote
