grid Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I have an extra spinning reel/rod that I want to set aside for topwater baits (Pop-R's, floating Rapala's, Husku Jerks, etc.) Which typ of line would be better, mono or fluorocarbon? Thanks! Quote
Fishin49er Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I would use mono. It has some stretch that you want and it floats. Quote
grid Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 If mono is the way to go, what color? Sould I try for something in green or the like to make it less visible? Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Definitely mono for me. I tried a Sammy once with a rod that had on Flouro. and halfway back, the lure was under water. As far as color is concerned, I'm sure it doesn't matter much. I have Cajun Red on my topwater rod right now and I had clear mono on before and there didn't seem to be any difference in success. Super User RoLo Posted April 30, 2007 Super User Posted April 30, 2007 I use braided spectra (Power Pro) with good results. The lures you mentioned are typically struck on the pause, where line-stretch is not important. On the other hand, the "hook-set" is common to all those lures, where a lack of line-stretch is a big asset. Roger Quote
cbfishalot Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Mono and I would use a co-poly before Fluo.!!! Just my 2 cents!! Quote
grid Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 Would there be any issues with the visibility of the braided line in moderately clear water with adverage cover? Quote
Super User senile1 Posted April 30, 2007 Super User Posted April 30, 2007 I use mono or braid. The importance of waiting until you feel the fish on topwater baits is even more important when using braid, since there is no stretch. If you don't wait until you feel them you'll jerk it away from them every time. With mono on long casts, you're going to experience a lot of stretch, so you'll need to adjust your hookset on these longer casts to make up for the line stretch. I've found that I need to set the hook relatively hard when the lure is far away. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 30, 2007 Super User Posted April 30, 2007 Clear mono, all the way, for topwaters. Doesn't sink like flouro, is not highly visible like braid. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User RoLo Posted April 30, 2007 Super User Posted April 30, 2007 Would there be any issues with the visibility of the braided line in moderately clear water with adverage cover? Bass fishermen think nothing of two clumsy, unnatural looking "treble hooks" dangling beneath the lure. Heck, those suspicious looking grappling hooks are automatically accepted by bass, right? BUT, that hair-like strand extending from the creatures nose, that'll spook the daylights out of any bass :D Gridiron, I'm honestly not aware of any line-visibility issue; if I thought it mattered I'd use a leader, but I don't. Roger Good point Rolo, I do use a leader just to keep my partner mouth shoot but I also don't beleive it :-X does anything for me Quote

acar555 Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I have not had any problems catching 5 lb. smallmouth bass on topwater lures in very clear water (15 ft. + vis) with braid line. Powerpro and Sufix Performace braid. I use braid for all of my topwater applications. But if you are only going to use mono or fluorcarbon then use the mono because it doesn't sink. Quote
