linesider7 Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 I've been flipping lately with a Pflueger Summit and am beginning to notice a little noise coming from the reel. I'm curious what reels you guys are using for heavy cover flipping (braid) and hearing how the reels have held up to the abuse. Is there even such a reel that can really come out of this sort of abuse day in and day out and still feel smooth as the day you bought it? Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 17, 2007 Super User Posted April 17, 2007 Shimano Cardiff CDF100A spooled with Power Pro 50# test; used for flipping deep water structure for the past 5 years with absolutely no problems. Quote
Hawgin Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I use a Shimano Citica 100 DSV with 50# power pro. No problems for me so far. Quote
basspro48 Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Shimano Citica 200C (the old one) spooled with 50lb Stren Super Braid. I have had this reel for 3 years and have done limited maintenance to it and it is still as smooth as the day I bought it. Quote
linesider7 Posted April 21, 2007 Author Posted April 21, 2007 Wow, I really expected to hear more reports on daiwas, Pfluegers, Revos, Quantums, etc. I used a Revo SX for a brief stint before losing the rod overboard. (bad story) It seemed like it would be good. Real small reel, palmed great. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted April 21, 2007 Super User Posted April 21, 2007 Shimano Calais CL200A with 50lb Power Pro, mostly pitching in heavy cover with a 7'6" Loomis FS904 Flippin stick. Smoother than the day I bought it. Ronnie Quote
HomersTomaco Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 curado 200. You need a well built reel to take abuse like that. The summit is meant to do basically the opposite of what you are using it for. Its meant to be a lightweight small finesse reel, Quote

Guess it wouldn't do good on a toad rod either (what I bought it for originally) Really didn't know though, Guess I keep it through the rigors and see how it holds up. I still use a lot of old green curados, I keep one of my other flipping stick. Has held up well, although far from perfect. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted April 21, 2007 Super User Posted April 21, 2007 If you are truly "flipping", IMO just about any reel will do. The rod does about 99% of work in the case of flipping. Now if you are using it for pitching as well (like the majority of us probably do) then the reel is a little more important. I had been using a Shimano Castaic in the past with no problems, great reel. This year I wanted something a little easier to palm so I went with a Curado 100D. Quote
eulerentinc Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Was using shimano Curado 200DHSV with 65# Sufix Braid now using Quantum PT Burner. I like the Quantum better. Personally, you shuoldnt be having any trouble with the reel. It doesnt really get that much of a workout. Did you ask REELMECH about your issue? Quote
Super User cart7t Posted April 21, 2007 Super User Posted April 21, 2007 4 reels I heartily endorse for flippin Shimano Castaic. Designed for the job, Instagage works nicely. Pflueger Supreme PSP-1H. Great reel, you can find these on the forums or Ebay. Flippin switch. Solid reel. Garcia 2005LP. I use one of these. Flippin switch. Great for the purpose. Garcia Revo S. No flippin features but the drag is incredible. A flipping reel is used more like a winch than anything. Smoothness of casting isn't a prerequisite. No need to go spending huge dollars on something that's used for holding line and winching fish out of cover. Quote
flyphisher # Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Old Daiwa Pro-caster X, havent been able to find anymore like it. Didnt want it and got in a deal w/ a buddy for 2 rods i wanted he was selling cheap. All the new procasters are crap compared to these. This one has aluminum frame is as smooth and quiet as a TDZ seriously, just not as pretty and shiny. 15lb P-line premium. Also use a Abu-Garcia 2005LP, decent, simple reel for the price. I dont like it, But it works no more than i use it for the purpose. It was free. Use 50lb spiderwire stealth on it. Quote
lubina Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 I mostly pitch, jigs with Accurist PT and soft plastics with TD-Z, both with Sufix 50-65 lbs Quote
TrickyVT1887 Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Shimano Curado 200BSF with 50lb Sufix braid Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Gotta go along with justfishin, if you want a reel that will handle heavy line for close quarter flipping and winching, then there are none better than the Garcia® round bodies. When I was flipping, mine was a 1985 5501C, on one of the cheapest 7'6" mag heavy sticks I could find, great setup for winching LMs out of heavy cover. Just my .02¢ Tight Lines!!! Quote
The_Natural Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I mainly pitch also; I flip probably 10% of the time when compared to pitching. I use either one of my Mg50's or TDZ's, and 15lb CXX or 17-20lb fluoro. Quote
HPBB Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 on one Flippin stck I use a Team Daiwa -S 103HSDL have had it for 4 years and its is as smooth & quite as the day i bought it. looking to get another soon. This year my other flippin stick has a Team Daiwa Veinto. Used it at two tournaments this year and it has worked great. both run 40# spiderwire stealth Quote
bassin_man Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Mark another Shimano guy down. A Castaic 201 to be exact. Just bought it this year and already love it. Quote
