huskertko Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 I just bought a Chronarch MG after having several problems with Citicas, but to me my old Curados feel and sound so much smoother than the Chronarch. Are my expectations for the MG too high? When I reel in line, I can definitely hear the reel working, that is not the case with my curados or even my BPS pro qualifier. Did I get ANOTHER bum steer from Shimano? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 17, 2007 Super User Posted April 17, 2007 I think so...You're on a roll! Seriously, I just can't imagine what's going on, but don't "let it go." The Chronarch MG should be PERFECT in everyway. Personally, I would call Shimano, tell your story and send the reel DIRECTLY to them for replacement. Keep a record of names, numbers and time. I am sure Shimano will take care of you and investigate the problems you have endured. This whole story is simply ridiculous! Go direct and get this resolved. Quote
Hot n Tot Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 The problem with 'smoothness' is that it is all subjective. The reel one person thinks is buttery smooth, another finds faults. For example, most people laud the Stradic as a great spinning reel. Mine is disappointing to me because I can 'feel' or 'hear' the gears in it. This is not the case with my Sustain, so I'm perhaps unfairly comparing the Stradic to the Sustain which costs almost twice as much. I even took my Stradic back to the Gander Mtn store and compared it to another one, they seemed to be identical. When I compare the Stradics to the Symetres, I prefered the cheaper Symetre because my expectations were lower. When you get above the Curado in Shimano reels, the increase in smoothness should be slight, but detectable to you. If not, you may just have a 'bad' one, that someone else with a less educated feel would think is a wonderful reel :-/ Quote
huskertko Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 I guess that is my concern, I can hear the reel when retrieving line, it feels smooth, though not that much smoother than my older curados. It just seems that the reels always seem smoother and quieter in the store, then when I get them home I compare it to what I felt and heard in the store and it not the same. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 I'd deal directly with shimano. I wouldnt waste anymore time with dealers. I also agree with hot n tot too Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted April 17, 2007 Super User Posted April 17, 2007 What you just explained is the issues I have always had with Shimano. At one point ALL my reels were Shimano, now ALL I use is Daiwa, except for a 50 MG that I love. Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 17, 2007 Super User Posted April 17, 2007 I know what you mean because I got that sensation when I purchased my first Scorpion Mg, not having found absolutely any flaw in the components, no misalignments, no nuthin the only thing I can put the blame on is that they have different feel due to the magnesium frame and sideplates, got 2 Scorpion Mgs and a ChMg, all have the same feel. Did I get ANOTHER bum steer from Shimano? I have 4 50 MG's and none were like that when new.... after a very hard year for fishing one of them it is just now developing what you describe.... I just think it's time for ReelMech to clean and relube it. I think you bought one that has been on the shelf so long it needs a lube job. Just sounds like you have had a run of bad luck... Quote
DRat Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 I have the chronarch as well as calais. You should not be "hearing" the reel work. Quote
TrickyVT1887 Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 One thing I would do personally is lube the reel you never know how long its been sitting on a shelf sometimes thats all it needs, that was what fixed my Curado 200B5 you could feel the gears when reeling with a little grease and oiled her up and she was working fine. As much as I would like to deal with Shimano directly, I am a very impatient person, and with the weather finally being nice enough to get out and fish, I took it back to BPS. Luckily the Shimano rep was in the store so he got an earfull, and he was just as shocked with the history that I have had as I was. I really needed some additional tackle so I exhanged the MG for a new Curado and used the difference for much needed stuff. I know the MG and Curado are not the same, but I have had such good luck with my other Curados, I decided to take a chance. I have one rule when it come to buying reels, if I need to break it down, reoil, relube and reassemble, then it is going back for another one, if I wanted to do that, I would buy a used one and go from there, maybe it is stubbornness or laziness, but that is how I feel about buying new reels. KYbass1276 Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I had a similar experiance with the chronarch that I bought, While it wasn't the mg I still expected it to be alot quieter than it was. It was smooth but you could really hear it working. And casting wise I didn't think it was all that good. I am very happy with the Curado that I have and was really excited when I got the Chronarh but was quickly let down. I still like the curados I'm not much on the Citca's and I haven't used any other reels from shimano so I can't speak of them, but I took a chance on Diawa and bought a zillion and I liked it so much I returned the Chronarch and got another Zillion. I haven't given up on shimano but I'm glad I took a chance with Diawa. I'm the same way I don't like waiting and when you spend that kind of money It should be perfect out of the box Quote

Agreed...That's just too bad, I can hardly believe you would have such back luck on consecutive occasions...NO WAY! The Shimanbo guy should have replaced your Chronach MG and given you a Curado for free. I don't fix "new." Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Careful Mud they will have tht rope around your neck faster than you can say Bonzai tree! LOL Quote
Fishing Doug Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 all of the Shimano baitcasters I have used-Citica, Chronarch, Curado... feel and sound like a meat grinder compared to my Daiwa's. I am with Redline.......but I now have zero Shimano baitcasters strong, silent, blah blah blah. guess I have been spoiled by Daiwa! ;D ;D ;D Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 18, 2007 Super User Posted April 18, 2007 I have never had a problem with any of my Shimano's. I started with 4 Citica's then 4 Curado's and a Chronarch 50Mg. No problems with any of them, perfect right out of the box. However, I bought one of the TD-Z's from Cabelas and it felt terrible. I also realize it probably had been setting a while and needed to be oiled, but I just sold it anyway. JB Quote

Wish I felt that way. I don't normally dog any brand... My 50 MG's were all like butter and my 2 Daiwa purchases last year were both flops right out of the box. (and yes, one was a TD-Z) And the whole lot of TD-Z's that have been complained about recently from the cabela's sale... I fail to see how Daiwa is doing any better than Shimano... and honestly I think Shimano sells way more reels so the % of problems is likely lower. No brand is perfect- and all reels should work out of the box. All this thread has done for me is to reinforce the need for better QC in both companies. Quote

Bingo. I mentioned this in the thread about the gentleman that was disappointed in his TDZ, and I felt the same way a few years ago when I held a magnesium reel at BPS for the first time. Magnesium reels feel different; they are actually sensitive reels. You feel everything, but it's a precision feel, and with an ultra-lightweight high end rod, it equates to a more sensitive combo. LONGEARS Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Braided line on a reel is not as smooth or quiet as mono or flo or a hybred and much more so than a empty reel on a store counter Quote
Bud Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 psstt: pflueger ssshhhhh!!!! Do they make a Reel????????????????? Quote
Super User Alpster Posted April 19, 2007 Super User Posted April 19, 2007 I love my Mgs!!!! Smooth as silk after 1000s of casts. My Calais's are the same, strong, silent, smooth as butter. My Calcutta's are the same, incredible reels. I really don't understand the problems Huskerto is having. Mine are older reels and have been around for a while. Maybe Shimano QC is starting to suffer. That would be a dissapointment, but my reels are excellent and a joy to fish with. Still in the posse..... Ronnie Quote
huskertko Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 When I took the MG back to BPS, I had a couple of employees check it out themselves, thinking I was just imagining the sounds and feels of the reel, but they also said it didn't sound or feel right. I got a Curado 100D, took it out today for a little while and so far so good, it seems to be a great reel. Quote

However, the CU100D is a nice reel and should be trouble free for years to come but the 50 MG is like a CU100D minus almost 2 oz. of weight. Hope you have nothing but great luck with this one, you sure deserve it!! Quote
