LAURASDAD Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Hello, Let the party begin. Looking for a new spinning reel. Both the above reels appear to be nice quality reels for a little over $100. Most of the the counter guys at BPS and Cabelas seem to push Shimano. The Tierra appears to be a real nice reel. I have read a few reviews on the web that are very favorable for the Daiwa. Please offer your opinions on which reel and more importantly why. thanks very much Larry Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 16, 2007 Super User Posted April 16, 2007 New to be known vs old time tested proved reliability after about a decade of being released. How many times I 've heard: The best, smoothest most fanstastic reel I 've ever used ----> many times and 2-3 years later the curses begin to appear, where 's the: The best, smoothest most fanstastic reel I 've ever used appreciation made 2-3 years ago ? Not saying that the Tierra is going to be a bad product but look at it the way I do, let others do the test and keep your money safe, if no problem after a couple of years of use and abuse then I can buy it. If I want my money safe right now and the BM is uncontrolable then go with old time tested proved reliability , I know I 'm not going to get burned. Quote
Guest avid Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 I have never had reliablility problems with any daiwa product, including cheap reels like the TX. I also have had excellent service from my Shimano spinning reels. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..... that being said, I wouldn't let factors like reliability or durability enter into my decision. I would hold an example of each in my hand, turn it , flip the bail, spin it really fast and see which one keeps turning the longest, etc. In other words, take your time, play around with each. See which one feels better to you and buy it. PS. VERY IMPORTANT - All reels are not created equal, by that I mean, different samples of the exact same reel may feel a little different. As good as quality control has gotten these days, there still are "acceptable limits" for tolerences, fit, etc. Whenever I make a decision about a reel, I always ask the clerk for several examples. Sometimes they sqwak a little, but I insist. It never fails. I will always feel subtle differences. You are the one who will fish the reel, not the salesman, so you should pick the EXACT one you want. Avid has spoken Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted April 16, 2007 Super User Posted April 16, 2007 Both companies make excellant reels. Go with the one that feels best to you. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 16, 2007 Super User Posted April 16, 2007 What Raul is saying definitely has merit. However, since Daiwa has been in the spinning reel game for quite some time, and the Tierra has nothing new and revolutionary, you should be safe. I have both Tierra and Stradic and like them both A LOT! Daiwa has more sizes available, and that's nice for balancing options. Quote
HomersTomaco Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 theres a reason they push them, because they are the best. They dont want a $120 reel to break and you to return it, so they give you the most reliable product. The stradic is great. Diawas just dont last as long. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted April 17, 2007 Super User Posted April 17, 2007 shimano has a well documented binding when wet issue.i have had it happen as have many others on www.nybass.com .shimano refuses to aknowledge these issues and many nybass members have switched to diawa because of this.i switched to pflueger spinning reels because of it. http://www.nybass.com/showthread.php?t=21126&highlight=shimano+binding Quote
