I see 5'6" pistol grip bait casting rods for sale but I have never seen anyone use one or talk about them. My question is do you use one and if so when do you use it and what kind of lure do you throw with it?

I have one in my rod closet.  I sometimes use it with Zara Spooks but not often.

I use pistol grips more so then my trigger rods i have about 15 of them and too me they are the most versatile for short and med range casting which i find myself doing the most.I have both 6 footers and 5-6 rods.Falcons comprise the most of them but i have 3 ugly stiks also and a few berkleys,Garcias.Lots of places have them on clearance for some odd reason ppl think 7 foot trigger rods are the"IN" thing they have a place and time (c-rigs,big crankbaits,)  But too me i have more fun and seem too be more efficient using Pistol grips!!

Pistol grips are great when fishing tight to cover with short casts, when working spinnerbaits, cranks, buzzbaits.  If you ever watch Hank Parker you'll see he uses them fairly often.  I think they're great when covering lots of water, and have good accuracy.

When I want a very accurate cast like to a specific fork in a laydown I would use a short pistol grip rod.

I find that a pistol grip is the best grip for topwater use. I also like one for jerkbaits. I wish there were a larger selection to choose from.

Cheers,

Got several of them and there 's always one in my boat when fishing, when I need to make an ultra pin point accurate cast time to switch to the old 5 '6" pistol grip and magic happens.  :)

Boy, was I ever wrong! I was under the bad impression that I must be the only one left that liked them that much. I rarely need the distance some of you guys do so I never got anything different. Sorry I just thought and I do have a 6'M Bionic Blade, but it is a pistol grip. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places but it seems the higher end rod manufactures don't even carry them. It would seem like that as many of the folks as we have on the forums that we must represent a pretty good cross section and it wouldn't be that way...

GLoomis still manufactures 5 '6" pistol grips only problem is finding a dealer that carries them.  :)

I have an old Bionic Blade IM6 pistol grip I used exclusively for topwaters.  I've got a couple more 6' rods that I wish had pistol grips on them but have straight handles.

At one time you couldn't get anything other than a pistol grip rod for bass fishing.

Thanks Reelmech and Raul, hope to give something like one of those 2 a try one day.

I'm one of those old stick-in-the-mud folks that it takes 2 come alongs and a large pry bar to change the way I do something when it works for me. I started fishing back when there were "nothing but pistol-grips". Guess that's why I'm still using them...

I have two 5'-6" pistol grips that I use for casting crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and topwaters.  I stick to the longer trigger rods for plastics and jigs.

I've got an old Lew's Speed Stick, 6' pistol grip.  It was my first "real" bass rod and had a ABU 5000C reel on it.  Dad gave it to me for my 13th birthday back in '76.  Boy did I ever catch a bunch of fish on it!  It's retired to my tackle hall of fame now.  Don't really know why I don't fish the pistol grip anymore.
