G3 Fan Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I have been invited to fish a buddy fishing league this year, of course this great opportunity comes when my rod/reel inventory is at an all time low but that is another long story. My question to you is how do the BPS Extreme and/or Rick Clunn signature series casting rods and especially reels perform? I can't pass this chance up but it couldn't come at a worse time financially (taxes etc) I can't decide if I should sink a bunch of money into one good outfit and try to fish the season with one casting and one spinning outfit ( I already have a good spinning set up) or if I should pick up 3 or 4 of the BPS combos so I can be rigged on the water. Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions. Quote
Pa Angler Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I have and used the Bionic Blade, Extreme and Johnny Morris Edition rods all excellent rods in their price range wait for the sales can't beat the quality at their sale price. Quote
I stink at fishing Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I have a BPS extreme rod and casting reel and I Like them alot . For the money BPS makes a great product Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 I have three rods and two reels from BPS. All were on sale, and all have been good performers. For the prices, BPS gear is hard to beat. Cheers, GK Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted April 10, 2007 Super User Posted April 10, 2007 Rods? You shouldn't have any issues. As several have said, generally pretty good for the money. Just wait for a sale Reels? While I have never had an issue like this come up, generally folks on this board recommend others stay away from house brand reels. In the event service is needed, it becomes a hassle to get these guys fixed. Quote
Hot Rod Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 For the price I like the BPS rods too for casting sticks. I don't like them as spinning rods however. I don't think I'd go out and buy the reels by themselves but when you get them on sale as a package deal with the rods they are so inexpensive they are worth it. For example I got an extreme rod/reel package on sale. It cost around $20 more for the package than for the rod itself at regular price so I couldn't pass it up. The reel performs o.k. but not quite as well as I'd prefer and I'm not sure how long it will last. For tournaments my philosopy is that if you have to choose between quality and quantity for rigs choose somewhere in the middle. Don't get the most expensive because you won't have enough rigs to present baits in a variety of methods efficiently. But don't go with the cheapest either because they won't hold up and might fail during a tournament nor will they perform like they should. I think the BPS Bionic Blades are tough to beat for the money though prefer the Extremes if you can spend a little more. I also recently purchased a BPS Med action 7' finese rod, mostly because it was on sale, to replace another lighter action rod to thow weightless soft plastics and I am very pleased with it. I just wish they offered the same rod in a MH action too. It is even a little nicer than the Extreme BPS. As a co-angler I'd go with two decent spinning outfits and 2 or 3 decent casting outfits. Especially since as a coangler you may not know what kind of fishing conditions/methods to expect until you get to the lake or pre-tourney meeting. (As an aside there are some really good articles on this site and on FLWoutdoors about how to fish as a coangler that I have found very useful.) Quote
Jeff P. Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I have 2 BPS Extreme baitcast reels, 1 Pro Qualifier baitcast reel, and a 6 1/2 ft BPS Tourney Special rod (Med power and moderately slow action, I really like it for crankbaits). I have used all of these products the entire season last year and I am well pleased with the performance of all 4 products. If you are able, look for these items on sale and you can save even more money. Quote
Guest the_muddy_man Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I have a BPS etreme rod and reel combo i use for worming and jigs and i have a BasPro Series Castng reel and I am more than satisifed with them I would always wait for a sale because they switch around their sales a lot and you can save big dollars As far as housebrand reels they encole the adress in MO where you send the reels for service and repair hats the difference you still gotta send them to someone?
