Hello everyone, I just bought my first good spinning rod, it is a plueger president and a St. Croix rod. I have used it a few time with no problems, but today it kept tangling up. I have 10 lbs. Berkley Trilene line on it and fishing with 3" tube jigs with 1/16 oz. weighted jig hooks. Please Help.

Thanks

Sounds like you just have line twist.  If you fish from a boat, troll out your line with no lure on it almost to the end of the spool. (do this whil idleing)  let it troll a minute and then reel it in and all your twist will be gone.  If you bank fish you can still do it by walking the bank but it's a lot more work.   ...lol   This will remove the twist and you will be good as new.

I do this about every 1-2 fishing days and never have twist problems.

make sure that your line is always tight when your reeling in.if it is slack it will go onto the reel very loosely and for sum reason or another make a "birds/rats nest"

This is the inherent problem with Spinning gear.  The only known solution (and it is not a PERFECT solution) is to use a swivel.  Try learning a baitcaster, after the first few trips you will find yourself wondering why you ever fished a spinning rig to begin with (unless it is for ultra lightweight baits).

i use spinning gear as well but i dont like baitcasting reels...for some reson or another it is just to unfamiliar to me an it is hard for me to lean.ive tryed my uncles before an its just really awkward...however one thing spinning has ove baitcasting fro ym observations are that my spinning reels get tangled more often but its less of a hastle to undo.but my uncle has to spend forever trying to fix his bait caster the few times it happens

SOUNDS LIKE LINE TWIST : HERES A FEW THINGS TO FIGHT IT

MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOU FILL THE REEL WITH LINE THAT THE LINE IS COMING OFF THE SPOOL IN THE SAME DIRECTION IT GOES ON THE REEL

YOU CAN EITHER LET LINE OFF THE BACK OF THE BOAT ( AT TROLLING SPEED) OFR YOU CAN WALK THE LINE OFF YOUR REEL IN A FIELD AND THEN APPLYING PRESSURE RE REEL THE LINE IN

I ALWAYS PUT A BARRELL SWIVEL(not a sanp swivel) AT THE TAG END OF MY LINE AND ADD A 8 TO 14 INCH LEADER TO IT(tHATS THE MOST IMPRTANT WAY TO PREVENT TWIST FOR ME)

NEVER OVERFILL THE SPOOL. FILL IT TO ABOUT 1/8 INCH FROM THE LIP OF THE SPOOL

GET INTO THE HABIT OF FLIPING THE BAIL CLOSED BY HAND AT THE END OF THE CAST THIS PREVENTSS LOOPS

NEVER EVER REEL IN WHILE THE DRAG IS GOING OUT(thanks NBR)

Just out of curiosity, why does no one recommend placing a small swivel between the line and the lure?

Hey Long Mike I experimented over the years and i found a small barrell swivel away from the lure keeps twist away and if you put like a 14 inch leader when you retie you can keep the same leader til it gets too small. I never used a snap swivel b/c it really messes with the action of lures like original rapalas, shad raps and cranks. i used the barrel swivel/leader and a snap( just a plain locking snap) at the lure with great sucess STILL DO!!!!!!

Another solution is to remove about 1/2 of the mono and install some braided line-no worries about line twist then. You may have to do the trolling behind the boat thing about every two years though.

go to wal mart and for $11.74 buy yourself some power pro braided line. i suggest 10# or 20# test. i don't know what you fish for, but this should work. braided lines work very well with spinning gear imo. i also use it on my baitcasters.

I suggest trying Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (11.9 lb test) on your spinning reel.

Be sure you are not cranking with the drag slipping. Nothing outside of twist when putting the line on the reel creates more twist.

The rat's nests are caused by loose loops of line on the spool. Lion twist aggravates the problem. You can't do much about the twist, except what has been already mentioned. You can get rid of the loops.

At the end of the cast, just as the bait hits the water, extend your index finger on your rod hand down to touch the spool edge. This will hold the line is place as you raise the rod tip. Close the bail by hand as you raise the rod tip. This will prevent the loop from forming in the spool. With a little practice, this becomes automatic. Did I mention, close the bail by hand. Do not crank the handle to close the bail.

Cheers,

GK

Yep. I recently put new line on both of my spinning reels. I overfilled both of them and had the line loose. I trailed about 100 feet of line off behind the boat on one of them, and the one I didn't got tangled. I ended up cutting about 1/2 the spool off because it got knotted. I have learned my lesson big time.
