slider Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I have a bass pro shops extreme bait cast reel, when i cast this reel it makes a grinding sound but still cast very well and has no other problems its just noisy. this is the second one of these reels that i have had with this problem. The first one I bought I sent back and they replaced it. I talked to a guy at bps and he said that it had not been lubricated properly from the factory. they sent me a new one and it worked fine all last summer, but then last week it started making the grinding noise just like the first one. My question is if it just needs oil or grease how do i go about it. Im new to baitcasters and would appreciate any help. thanks Quote
woodpro1102 Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I am no expert by any means but I would just try to lube it up and if that doesnt work swap it for a different brand or atleast a different model. This stuff cost good money and there is no reason you should spend it and have to deal with not being 100% happy with it. Good luck and I hope you dont have to return it or have this same problem again. Alex Quote
Clayton Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 Mine did the same thing like two weeks ago. Except mine was brand new! When they had the classic sale I got two more and the first time I used it, it made that awful noise. It is not an extremly complicated reel, you could take it apart and clean just be careful and dont put too much oil on it. Quote
HomersTomaco Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 how often have you cleaned it, oiled it and greased it? Baitcasters need this every few trips, chances are you havent been taking care of your stuff. Quote
MS Berry Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 I tear down and repair some reels several times a year and the main problem is that when someone puts them up they do not clean and lube them. The gears in some reels are plastic and it depends on what climate you live in they will get extremely dry from all of the heat in the house and no humidity. That will ause the worm gear, mostly plastic, to dry rot if you may. Once you have spun one or two teeth off of it the reel will make some horrible noises when cast and reterieved. I hope this helped and good luck Quote
Spencer W Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 The best way to fix one is to take it back and get a shimano or daiwa ;)JK Quote
MS Berry Posted April 6, 2007 Posted April 6, 2007 The best way to make sure you can clean and/or repair your reel is to buy a Abu Garcia round reel. There are a ton of sites on the net that walk you through the process. I have several if anyone needs them. You can also call Abu Garcia and talk to a representative about ordering parts and they cost you about half of what everyone else is selling them for. I love Shimano, Daiwa, and Quantum PT's but Abu Garcias are the easiest to clean and repair Quote
slider Posted April 6, 2007 Author Posted April 6, 2007 thanks for the tips, I will take the reel apart this weekend since its to cold to fish and try to clean it. Hopefully I did not wait too long and already messed up the worm gear. If so I guess I will be looking for another reel to replace it with. thanks again. Quote
extreme1018 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 bass pro reels are actually made by phleuger. i have two of them for about two years (johnnymorris and a prolite) now and they work as good as new. use some hot sauce. if you look around on ebay on the paintball section or do some searching on the web for a grease called SLICK from southernpaintball.com it is one of the best greases i have ever used for a reel Quote
Rob G. Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Slider, I believe parts and service are avaliable from Outdoor World. Do a web search, you should be able to find it. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 slider, I have a bass pro shops extreme bait cast reel, when i cast this reel it makes a grinding sound but still cast very well and has no other problems its just noisy. If your reel is making the noise during the cast then the culprit is the spool support bearings, they are either dry and have not been lubed properly, or the bearings are of low quality and the things will always be rough sounding (unless packed with grease the way the manufacturers like to keep them quiet). If the noise is coming when you are retrieving (cranking the reel), then the culprit is in the crank assembly, make sure you have the reels schematic if you intend to break into this section of the reel.. Just my .02¢ Tight Lines All!! Quote
slider Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 reelmech, I sure wish I would have read your post before I took the reel apart. After taking it apart, looking at it, and thinking about it I did figure out that the noise would have to be coming from the spool. I went ahead and cleaned the reel and put a little bit of oil on it. The problem I had was getting the thing back together, took me awhile to figure it out but eventualy got it. It did seem to fix the noise for now but who knows if it will last. Also i am looking for another baitcaster under a 100 bucks, any reccomendations? thanks again for your help. Quote
