Wabasmstr Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Want to use braided line with a fluorocarbon leader (Stren braid with P Line Halo) for skipping under docks, etc. Whats the best knot to use and does anyone use this and how is your success.... Any problems to look out for? Thanks, Wabasmstr Quote
Super User burleytog Posted April 4, 2007 Super User Posted April 4, 2007 If the lines are of similar diameter, double uni-knot. Quote
HPBB Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 yep, what Burley said That is what i use all the time. I use a leader with my braid 100% of the time. I don't use 100% fluro, I use the poly lines I use spider wire, original & stealth, with yozuri hybrid & P-line Floroclear leaders Quote
SPAZ Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 How long of a leader does everyone use for braid? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 4, 2007 Super User Posted April 4, 2007 I use fluorocarbon with braid for wacky rigging. I use the fluorocarbon for weight since the braid floats. I start with about 4'-5' and replace it after I retie several times and get down to about 2'. Uni-Uni connection for me. Quote
ThaKing Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 so the best way to go would be to use braided line with flouro? What lb test of braid? and flouro? Quote
Deuceu72 Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 I actually like the blood knot better for line to line ties..........and I would never throw braid without a fluro leader attached to it..........Typical setup for me with this? 30-40 lb suffix braid with a 20 -25 lb Seaguar Invisx leader.......... ;D Quote
ThaKing Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 i fished sufix line for a while now and i like the way its wide spool. can i ask y u use 25 lb test flouro vs. 15? Quote
sal669 Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Being that the braids are about 3- 4 times thinner than the equivalent fluoro/mono, I use an "Improved blod knot" (I think this is the proper name )See if I can get a link... http://www.marinews.com/Improved-Blood-Knot-215.php Hope it works! Why do you guys use similar diameter fluoro leader with braid??? Like 30#braid with 8# fluoro ??(About the same diameter) Most of the time I use 15# braid and 10# fluoro/mono/copoly on spinning outfit. On BC reel I go 30# braid mostly strait to lure. Rarely (very clear water) I use a 15-20# leader . I start with a 5-6 ft leader and keep cutting/retying until about 2-3ft Quote
Guest avid Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 I like to use a similar diameter leader and braid. I typically use 50# power pro (12 lb dia.) and 14 # trilene xl as a leader. I prefer mono leader over flouro because I want the leader to stretch, especially for topwaters, and crankbaits. For bottom fishing I don't use a leader at all, but will put on a light flouro leader (bpsXps) when dropshotting. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 5, 2007 Super User Posted April 5, 2007 Avid, do you use mono because it stretches more than fluoro when wet? Most fluorocarbon line stretches as much and more than nylon monos when dry. Quote
ThaKing Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 if your using 50# braid what # fluoro or mono would be good if your fishing 5-30 ft of clear water? Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 8, 2007 Super User Posted April 8, 2007 Braid with a fleuro leader is about all I use any more. I really like the sensitivity. With baitcasting I usually use about 25-35 braid with a 14-20 leader, about the length of the rod, using double uni knot which has always been reliable for me. With spinning I usually use 10 pound braid with 6-12 pound fleuro depending on what I'm fishing, double uni knot. Only caution is that the knot will get beaten up by going through the guides, and I think it is appropriate to cut back and retie every now and then, depending on the number of casts. In Canada, fishing 10-12 hours a day, I retie every other day. The double uni is easy with a little practice. Mick Quote
ThaKing Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 hmm so did i pick the wrong # for my braid? Im fishing a pflueger trion baitcasting reel holds (12/160 14/120 17/90) i bought sufix braid 50# (12 lb diam.) Would that be right or would i need to go smaller in braid? And if 50# braid is fine, what # fluoro for 50# braid? Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 8, 2007 Super User Posted April 8, 2007 I use 50 Power Pro on an inshore casting reel. Many use 50 braid for most fresh water casting - it's diameter is the equivalent of mono of about 12-15, if I'm not mistaken, so the 50 pound test is not as much overkill as it at first seems. You certainly wouldn't have much trouble with breakoffs, would be very tough and forgiving. I use 20 -30 fleuro with my 50 braid, and 14-20 with my lighter braid. Double uni knot should work with all these combinations, does for me. Make sure you lube the knots well as you tighten them. One factor that argues for going lighter on the lines, especially the fleuro, is that the heavier the line, the bigger the knot, the more it tends to get beaten up by the guides and the harder it goes through the guides. On the other hand, the heavier lines will be more resistant to damage. Quote
ThaKing Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 ok thanks for the info. I'll do the 50# braid and 20 # fluoro. this shouldnt interfere with me catching fish right? They'll still hit the same as light line right? Quote
Pa Angler Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 If the lines are of similar diameter, double uni-knot. I concur, but I use the braid striaght up without a leader I have found that fishing cover and in the shade under docks I don't need a leader just something to consider. Quote
SneakySnook Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I use 10lb, 15lb, and 20lb power pro with a 15lb or 20lb flourocarbon leader. I have always done it this way and have never had any problems. It works great and as for knots I use a uni to uni knot or a slim beauty knot. The slim beauty not is smaller and goes thru the guides better. Quote
