Clayton Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Hey guys I broke my tip the other day in a wiered situation the other day and wanted to know what to do next. It is a seven foot pole and it is broken between then very tip and the second eye. can I fix it? should I make it a custom 6' 10" rod! Quote
Super User T-rig Posted April 4, 2007 Super User Posted April 4, 2007 Just take off the second guide and put a new tip on it! I will still work. Better then throwing it away and you can use as a spare rod. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 I would leave the guide were it is and just replace the tiptop. It will stiffen the tip action slightly but the rod is still useable, as a backup. Quote
Clayton Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 I was thinking you might say that. Where can I find the proper technique for doing something like this? What I mean is, is there a right up on this forum or a link online that could show me the way? Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 4, 2007 Super User Posted April 4, 2007 First check the condition of the blank and inspect there are no longitudinal cracks extending from the point of breakeage into the blank, if the material was broken clean; if you see longitudinal cracks then you 'll have to cut more ( normally to the closest guide to the point of breakage, if you don 't do this the tip will break again ), then purchase a rod tip as wide as the blank is where the tip was broken ( tips come in different sizes ) and get some hot glue. Heat the glue only enough to SOFTEN it a little and remove a small portion, with your fingers roll a small glue stick and insert it in the tip hole, hold the tip with pliers and heat with a lighter to melt the glue, insert the tip making shure it 's aligned with guides ( you have a few seconds to align it while the glue gets cold ), there will be some glue excess coming out from the tip, put some salive on your fingers and roll the excess to make a clean finish between the tip and the blank. Be careful when you do the manipulation hot glue can get very hot. Quote

That's how i would do it but i use crazy glue. Cant get burned that way! Quote
Super User Raul Posted April 4, 2007 Super User Posted April 4, 2007 Crazy glue ( cianoacrilate ) is hydrophilic T-rig, meaning that it traps end gets dissolved by water, besides it 's cristaline structure is not for places the are constantly under stress because it breaks away. Quote
nboucher Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Before you do anything with this rod, check the rodmaker's warranty. I broke the tip on a Bass Pro Shops Extreme casting rod while fishing at Lake Fork during the recent BR trip, and when I called BPS customer service, the woman who spoke to me said if the rod was less than a year old (it was about 10.5 months old) they would replace it under their no-hassle warranty. I explained it broke when I hooked a lunker that made a powerful lunge just as I was kneeling to boat it, and she said I didn't even have to explain how it broke. Quote
Clayton Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 I got it on ebay, and it is an 06 model Lightning rod. Will BPS cover me? Quote

Super User ww2farmer Posted April 5, 2007 Super User Posted April 5, 2007 well, that sucks. Why whould you expect BPS to warrenty a rod they don't make OR even sold you in the first place? I am not made of money, but if I broke the tip off a lightning rod, they are cheap enough to toss and buy a new one. Quote
Clayton Posted April 5, 2007 Author Posted April 5, 2007 I never expected them to, I was only curious if they would. Besides not everyone is made of money, tend to keep things until they can no longer be fixed! Quote
