Fellas,

stumbled across a fishing show the other day (drawing a blank on the name) and KVD was tossing jerkbaits with a spinning setup.  Do any of you guys use spinner gear for hard jerkbaits?   I have been using a MBR873 and TD-Z and it seems to get the job done.  Is there a benefit to using spinning gear that I am not aware of?  I remember a post a while back that discussed line size with jerkbaits, would this be part of the reason for spinning gear?

As always-thanks in advance

For now, I use a 7' Med spinning combo for everything exept swimbaits. Yes, BC reels have their pros, but I dont see any reason to not use a spinning reel for what I do, besides the fact that you can not thumb the spool. (which comes in handy sometimes) I fish heavy cover banks and casting spinning gear in tight spots is easier than casting IMHO.

I really just started experimenting with jerkbaits last year. I was throwing them on both spinning and baitcasting gear for smallies. To me, I felt like I could get a little better action out of the baits on the spinning gear, especially when I needed a real irratic retrieve.

hey Doug that show is called bass pros ,,,, i saw the same one .... as for jerk baits i just started using them last year ( and they arent a strength of mine eighter) ..... KVD makes it look so easy and i see why he catches so many bass with a jerk bait .... i geuss the whole casting or spinning thing would be personal prefrence .... i was thinking of tryin with a spinner this year just to see if i liked it better that way ..... also he was useing 8lb flour on spinning and 12lb flour on casting ..... maybee the smaller dia. of the 8lb gives that bait a better action ..... i dont know now ill have to try it .... yup you talked me into it Doug ,,,,, ;D

We throw a lot of jerkbaits in this area on spinning rods. I use both but when the wind gets up only a spinning rod.

Shimano Clarus 6ft 8 inch medium with x. This is a good beefy rod and a 4000 reel helps get a little more distance fishing 5 to 8 inch jerkbaits.

I change back and foreth between bc and spinning to get different looks.

For me it's about lure weight first, wind second and nightime. I fish baitcasters and spinning tackle without a general preference, but I prefer certain gear for specific conditions and tasks.  For medium weights, my preferred jerkbait combination is baitcasting: St. Croix Avid AC66MF (soft tip) matched up with a Shimano Calais 200.

For light lures (Rapala X-Rap (08), LC Pointer 76) it's spinning tackle for me. Some of my best jerkbait experiences have been at night, especially targeting walley or big brown trout. Spinning gear is the ticket here for me, too.

FD,

I will use a spinning set up if I need or want to down size my line.  Sometimes I get a better action with it.

My wife can not throw a bc.  So she uses the spinning set up, and when she starts to out fish me, I will go to the same set up.

Hope this helps.

I fish a 6' Med power St. Croix spinning rod with the lighter baits. You just gotta be careful to not real loops onto your spool when taking up slack if your are working the bait with jerks and pauses, and there is wind. Just my experience.

last season I always threw my jerkbaits on baitcasters and then I fished with a guy who threw xraps on spinning gear and got the bait a heck of a lot farther than I was getting it. I also saw that show too, gonna have to give it a try this year.

I used spinning gear for Jerk baits almost exclusively for many years, but since buying a lot of new baitcasting gear over the past 6 months will give Baitcasters a good try this season.

glad I asked the question...didn't realize so many of you used spinning gear for jerkbaits. I will add this to my list of presentations to work on.

ummmm...did I just justify a Steez spinning reel???!!!!  ;D

you can snap straight down with spinning giving the jerkbait better action.it's also more comfortable to me.i p[refer baitcasting for most applications but not for jerkbaits.

To me, spinning gear allows for farther casts and is easier on the wrist.  I always use spinning gear when fishing them on flats, but for accurate presentations to targets, baitcasting allows for much better control.

I enjoy spinning gear over my BCs unless im tossing large lures.  With my spinning I just have more confidence in what I am doing I suppose.  I did try it with one of my BC's one day and it just felt wierd.

Before I bought a high speed Zillion, I used a Shimano Sustain spinning reel.  I have found that this baitcaster to be the best for jerkbaits.  I love the Sustain but for a specific purpose it boils down to how much slack line I pull in to get a quick jerk and short pause.  Of course this is a personal preference.

I don't like a spinning reel for jerkbaits. It's way too easy to get loops in the spool when jerking, and reeling up slack line. And you know what happens then.

Cheers,
