Super User FishTank Posted March 19, 2007 Super User Posted March 19, 2007 I put my Zillion 7.1 to the test today. I hooked up with 9 large mouths using a Lucky Craft Pointer. The reel performed perfectly. This is the reel for jerkbaits, IMHO. If you give your lure a little jerk or big jerk, it doesn't matter. You can get the slack out the line with this high speed reel quickly during a pause and there is little to no back play in the crank. I have paired this reel (with this forum's recommendation) with a G. Loomis MBR 844C and it is, so far, an excellent match. I have fished LC pointers a lot in the past with great success but with the Zillion 7.1 and MBR 844C it seemed effortless. It has changed my outlook on how to fish a jerkbaits. Question for those how own the Zillion 7.1> The manual states that it should have the spool bearings oiled after each use. Do you guys do this? It seems excessive. Quote
SneakySnook Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 I haven't oiled my every time and it still works great. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 19, 2007 Super User Posted March 19, 2007 i think it wouldn't hurt.the guys who built it should know what maintenance it needs. Quote
Guest DavidGreen Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Looking at my schematics.... The only reason I can see to re-lube the spool support bearing every outing is that they are CRBB = Super Corrosion Resistant Ball Bearings, and need the lube to work well, and protect the Corrosion Resistant coatings. The only problem I see with that is, you don't remove any of the old oil before adding the new oil, as FishTank states that could be a little excessive, and IMPO actually slow the spool rotation down some over time. But then if you don't lube, and start to hear the bearings you have done the damage, and new ones are needed. I don't think that you want to have to purchase a new spool assembly, and end support bearing. Like dodgeguy said it couldn't hurt... Tight Lines!! Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 19, 2007 Super User Posted March 19, 2007 people have to learn just a micro drop will do.not the whole container of oil.i still think guys who never do any maintenance and then complain the reel gets rough are the worst.all mechanical things need some maintenace. Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 20, 2007 Super User Posted March 20, 2007 Every time seems excessive - once every 4 or 5 trips may be a better compromise. Quote
mike bat Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 i agree ... as a general rule ill take all my reels apart after 5 trips .... ill clean and add a drop of oil where i can .... not one of my baitcaster has faild me or givin me any trouble yet ( knock on wood ) :-?.....well there was that one cardiff that had a sticky drag system ... but that had nothing to do with oiling and cleaning ..... i believe when i baught the reel it had the problem ..... ;D Quote
GAMEOVER Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Ive got mine on a Megabass F4-610XDti Elseil. Purchased it for topwater and jerkbaits primarly.. I went all out on my Zillion and upgraded the spool bearings to ABEC 7s and a Carbontex drag. Debating on the IZE kit for it still. If I do get the IZE kit this will be one expensive Zillion. Quote

I hope for your sake that rod doesn't snap in half like all the others I have seen here lately. I guess only then you will find out how well Megabass stands behind their warranty. Keep your fingers crossed..........cool setup though. Quote
