Here's the deal, I spooled 12 pound Yo Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft on my baitcasters and haven't had any problems with it. I then spooled 6 pound Yo Zuri ultra soft on my Shimano Stradic and that is when the problems began. I had it all spooled up and took it out to give it a few casts and as soon as I turned the drag off or flipped the bail then the line just came flying off the spool in a big clump. I've spooled a number of other spinning reels with line (mainly mono though) and never had this happen. I looked at it and decided I had probably over filled it some and that might have screwed it up so I cut some off but it still happened. Then I thought I must've somehow messed up the line while spooling so I took it all off and put new line on (same Yo Zuri). I filled it a little less full and took it out and the same thing happened. Not as bad but nonetheless I don't think it's fishable. I honestly don't know why its doing that, maybe I'm missing something really simple :-?. Could I have got a bad batch? So if anybody has any ideas on how to fix it I'd appreciate it.

I just filled two Stradics with Ultra-Soft #6, fished both last Wednesday.  No problems whatsoever.

I'd like to see a photo of the situation.

I've been using #6 Yozuri Ultra Soft on my Stradic since last August with no problems. Sounds like a bad batch to me. I'd return it and try again. Roadwarrior may have some good input on this as I know he's been using it a long time and really knows his stuff. I started using it based on his recommendation and have been really happy with it.

I'll gladly post one up, I had thought about doing it in the first place but its kind of a bother.  I just grabbed the rod and reel to take a picture of what was happening and thought I'd take a quick little pitch to see what happened and it seemed a little bit better.  I still don't know if I would want to spend a day fishing with it.  I wonder if the line sat on the spool in the box a long time (I bought it at Gander Mountain) and maybe it just needs to gain the memory of sitting on a reel?  I will let it sit overnight and if in the morning its still messed up then I will post some pics.  Thats my best guess  :-?

Was it really cold outside when this happened?

Well it does it inside my house as well as outside.  The first time it happened it was about 50 and today it was 60 or so outside so I wouldn't consider it real cold.

Why don't you try some line dressing like reel magic? I bought some flouro when it first came out and although it was pure flouro and not the soft hybrid, I dealt with it about 3 minutes, took it off, respooled with copoly and never looked back. This was on a Stadic spinning reel. I don't feel flouro is made for spinning reels.  I just bought some Yozuri Soft the other week in #6 just to try it. I am always open to new ideas. I have not put it on yet. Some of my friends use braid and swear by it, some of them use flouro and swear by it also. For me, I like good ol' copoly. There are no idiosyncrasies to deal with, it just flat out works without all the , you have to do this or thats. This is only my opinion and is certainly not meant to down anyones choices in line. How is that for politically correct? :) :)

justfishin beat me to it.  Did you use any sort of line dressing (Reel Magic, other silicone spray, Tangle Free)?

When filling a reel, I'll spray some silicone on a rag and use that rag to hold the line as it goes onto the spool.  Or I'll give the spool a spray every 20 or so yards.

As for pure floruo on spinning reels, I don't like using anything more than 8 lb. test.  I've tried 10 and 12 flouro on spinning reels with poor results.  6 and 8 work quite well.  Then again, most spinning reels aren't the best vehicle for large diameter lines.

i had that same problem with yo zori hybred on my baitcaster .... so i went back to p-line .... now i couldent believe putting it on a spinning reel .... id suggest you try cajun red cast ,,, i used 10lb on my spinner .... this line is so limp ... no need to dress this line with any thing ..... just buy a spool and spool up then enjoy some catching .....  :)

I guess it really is different strokes for different folks.  I tried Red Cast on two spinning reels and one casting reel.  Found it to be one of the worst lines I have ever tried (was the worst until I made the mistake of trying Yo-Zuri X-Tex Cobra).  The Red Cast 8 and 12 lb. had the memory of 25 lb. discount line.

VABasser,

Take the line back for exchange. The original Hybrid can be springy on a spinning reel, #6 Ultra Soft is not.

I have never experienced the problem you are having and would NOT put up with it either. Get the spool replaced and you should not have any issues with this line.

I went ahead and just took pictures of what was happening so I'll post them up. I will just take it back and hopefully they will exchange for new. Here is the first one when the line is tight, everything looks fine to me.

Then when I cast this is what happens. The line springs off the spool and its all twisted and is just a general mess. Having to fish with it would suck.

Heres another shot of it

The pictures don't show it the greatest but it was the best I could get.

grab some red cast you wont be sorry ,,,, and you wont have any trouble .... i bet most people that say red cast is bad are tryinig the red litning ( this line is crap ) ..... red cast is one of my favorite monos to date .... and ive tryed a few ,,, trust .....  i believe a spool will cost ya 5 bucks .... not a bad price ,,, when you wont be fiddling with line all day .... :)

That looks like twist to me, not memory.  I assume you know about letting the line come off the filler spool the same way the reel takes it up (i.e. clockwise or counterclockwise)?

That picture does make it look like line twist. I would just take it back and get another spool. I have gotten bad line in other brands over the years. And for goodness sake get green line, lol. :)

It appears to me that the line has been put on backwards. If you can troll it out, it will be fine. Based on your pictures, I don't believe the line twist has anything to do with the reel or the line brand. (Sometimes the lable goes up, sometimes down. After a few cranks, lower the rod tip and check line for twist).

Just to clarify spooling...??? :)

- Assuming that reel moves clockwise, with rod facing out the bail would pass under the (reel) spool from right to left

- Facing the new spool of line from above, the line would come of the spool clockwise, or the right hand side.

- In this case the line would come off the right side of the new spool and go to the (reel) spool on the right side, never actually passing diagonally in front of the reel.

Did I get this right?   Thanks,

Leon

if placing the spool perpendicular to the floor ----> label on the right

if placing the spool paralel to the floor ----> label facing up.

Agree completely... even properly spooled line needs to be trolled every couple outings to remain trouble free.

couple things I see.

1.  if the line is just falling off in chunks at a time you have too much line on the spool.  Which it does look like from the pic

2. If you have a boat, cut the lure off and let about 50-75 yds drag behind the boat (at idle) in the water.  This will remove all the twists in the line.  Dont let it get caught in the motor.  This will fix all your problems

3.  Dont crank the handle to close the bail.  Use your hand to flip it over and pull the line tight before reeling.  I believe every time you crank the bail closed its like 1/2-1 twist.  Over time it will build and loop on you.

Follow those 3 steps and you shouldnt have a problem.

Lol this has turned into such a fiasco but I appreciate all the help. I always get confused spooling line on a spinning reel no matter how many times I do it. Thats another thing I like about baitcasting. I didn't know the trolling trick so next time I'm out, probably this weekend I will give it a shot. So no weight or lure on the line? RW, for the few cranks then drop the rod technique you don't flip the bail open right? And if the line twists up on your rod tip then you got it on backwards and so flip the spool of line over right? If so then I was doing that and there was no twist but whenever I flipped the bail the line would jump off the spool and be twisted. I tried it both ways and it did the same thing each time thats what had me befuddled.  But whatever I can troll it out and then I should be straight. :)

LAO162, don't worry about it. Just lay the spool on the floor and make a dozen cranks. Then stop cranking and drop the rod tip toward the floor. If the line twists up, flip the spool over and fill 'er up. If the line does not twist, don't flip the spool over.

VABasser, are you putting any tension on the line as you fill the reel? It looks to me like the line may be on the reel a bit too loosely. Try running the line through a piece of paper towel soaked in line conditioner. Squeeze it a bit to put some tension on the line, and keep the hand with the towel as far away from the reel as you can hold it.

Cheers,

GK
