Chode2235 Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Hey guys, I just picked up a 6'6 Medium power(MBR782C) G. Loomis IMX. Awesome rod, and I am so excited to use it this spring once the ice melts. Unfortunately I have a slight problem. I am looking for a baitcasting reel worthy of this amazing rod. What are your suggestions? I plan on using this rod as a pretty all purpose rod, and don't really fish a lot of heavy baits. Every once in a while I will tie on a 3.4 oz spinnerbait, but most of the time its light jigs, plastics, cranks, and spinnerbaits. I was looking at the curados, the fuego, and even the TD Advantage ST. I have been a daiwa guy for a while, and lean towards that, but don't want to be a slave to the brand. I want the best reel for the money. I would prefer to stay under $200, unless there is a pretty compelling reason to go over that. Anyway, I would like to hear your suggestions. Thanks. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 12, 2007 Super User Posted March 12, 2007 The Shimano Curado has always been know as a smooth, solid reel. Last year it was upgraded to make it an even better! I think you would find the Curado a good match for your G.Loomis. With nothing more than routine, annual maintainance, you can count on a decade or more of dependable service. This is a great reel, I'm sure you will like it, a lot! Quote

The AB Revo SX looks like a nice reel also but only time will tell. Quote
Aaron Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I have that exact rod with a Curado 100d on it. I love this combo, it is one of my favorite set ups. i don't think you would go wrong with a shimano reel of your choosing. Quote
shimanogloomis man Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Iv used the new curado 7.1 awsome reel. smooth and powererful ;D Quote
aggiebassin Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I would go with a Curado 100 or 50mg. exactly Quote
GAMEOVER Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 In order.. Daiwa Zillion (6.?:1 speed since your wanting all purpose), Abu Revo SX or STX, Chonarch 50/51MG, Curado, Chonarch B Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 12, 2007 Super User Posted March 12, 2007 I'd go for either the Curado or Zillion. The Curado 100 may cast lighter lures a little better than Zillion but,in my opinion, the Zillion just feels better. Quote
Chode2235 Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Thanks guys. I suspected there would be a lot of outpouring for the Curado. What really makes this reel so great. Especially when compared to the TD Adavantage etc? No one even mentioned that one, is it in a separate class all together? Quote
MitchIsFishin Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Just my observations, as I bought a curado 100dsv a couple of days ago. I can't compare it to a zillion (couldn't even find one when I bought a fuego), but comparing it to my fuego, it's just different. Very smooth, casts beautifully, easy to set up & well made. Most of the same qualities applies to the fuego as well, but they're different, where the daiwa feels a little more precise versus smooth. Go try them both (or buy both- you'd use 'em)! Quote
Chode2235 Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Whats the difference between the curado 100 and the 100 dsv? Is it just line capacity? Are there advantages to having one over the other, or is one designed for more specific applications? Thanks. Quote
hi_steel_basser Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I have the same rod with a Scorpion MG on it. It's my new favorite combo. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 15, 2007 Super User Posted March 15, 2007 If you compare the Curado next to a Zillion, you will see that there is a night and day difference. No offense to the Shimano guys here, as I was one before, but the Zillion is simply in a different league. It will cast a country mile and has a much more precise feel. Quote
VaBass80 Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 I've been using shimano reels recently bought a Abu garcia revo, i'm really liking it how it feels and performs gonna grab me another one next week. Quote
castaway Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Congratulations on your new rod.If I am not mistaken, the Zillion is over the $200.00 mark ? The light weight IMX should be absolutely fantastic paired up with a Shimano Chronarch 50MG.Its considerably lighter in weight than a Zillion for the same amount of money. :-/ Ivan Quote
USA-Retired Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 The difference between the 100D and 100DSV is the spool. I'm guessing, but I'll wager the casts will be marginally shorter with the DSV due to the spool weight. Shimano makes great stuff, as do some other manufacturers. Most people buy and fish Shimano..so, you get many more referals for that brand over any other. Best advice is check out a few reels from different manufacturers and choose the one that you like. Like anything else, there is a "herd" mentality when it comes to fishing reels. I have a Curado 100D and love the little thing. I will be buying a Daiwa Alphas (if I can find one) or a Sol in the near future. Daiwa makes great stuff too. I've handled the Abu Garcia low profile and was very impressed with their operation. When you spend upwards of $200 or more for a reel, you'll get a quality product regardless of the brand name. If you take care of it, it will last you a life time. Regards and good luck. Quote

Super light and will cast small cranks and 1/4 oz t-rigs a mile. Check around .. I got one from Simmons Sporting Goods on Ebay for $215 including shipping. Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 15, 2007 Super User Posted March 15, 2007 Before you buy, do an Ebay search for the reel you decide on. If the seller has 100% satisfied buyers, you will likely not go wrong (on brand new reels). This way you can get a $240 Quantum PT Tour for about $180, or if you're stuck on Curados, Curados for about $160. I just did this for a Quantum PT Tour and it casts like a dream! I expect all the $240 reels cast like dreams, and from what many are saying, the about $200 Curados are very good. As I said once before on this forum, it would really be great if we had a spot where we could try out a number of reels. Anyone know of that spot? Quote
castaway Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 I have a MBR783 paired with a Metanium XT.The Metanium is basically the Japanese version of a Chronarch 100b.It is really nice, just thinking the lighter weight MG would be a bit nicer since the IMX is so light. :-/Ivan Quote
Chode2235 Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Yeah, I've got a 'take $20 off' thing from Cabelas that I was thinking of using. I have bought a couple of spinning reels on ebay before and have been satisfied with the purchase. Thanks for the help guys. I still don't know what I am going to buy, but I want to check some reels out in person. Is the only diff between the Curado DSV and the regular just line capacity? Quote
Chode2235 Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 You should have known better than to mention ebay to me. I went out and saw a Curado with less than a minute on it for $140, and I ended up winning the auction for $150. Not a bad price. So now I am also the proud owner of a Curado 100. I feel like a little RoadWarrior with my Loomis rod, my Shimano reel, my Yo-Zuri line, and my fat ikas. Thanks for the input guys. Quote
