Boleroff Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Howdy All! Looking for some advice and feed back on a Pitching & Flipping Rig. I visit these forums when I can and everyone here is so friendly and informative. I'm currently considering a St. Croix AC70MHF with a Tour Edition PT from Quantum (aka Burner). Not sure what line yet (feedback would be appreciated). Just wondering if this was good, bad, too much or too fast. Thanks! Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 My pitching set up is a 7ft 1" heavy rod with a 6.3 reel. Works really good. It works pretty good for flippin but when I flip heavier cover I like a stiffer rod or 7'6". Quote
aggiebassin Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 i think the faster reels work good for pitching and flipping. i use a 6.2:1. i am thinking of getting a 7:1 this year. the faster retrieve lets you pick up line when you have a bight very fast. which in my opinion keeps them from digging deeper in cover and wrapping you up. and these new high speed reels are built very well. these HS reels do not lack in power. i would suggest a shimano curado for your reel if you want a 7:1. i do not have much experience w/ quantums but i do know that shimanos will last and the curado is a great reel. stumpyfd Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 i put a curado 7:1 on my flipping stick this year 7'6 clarus. thinking on upgrading to a 1piece 7'6 crucial. for pitching i use a 7'heavy crucial on that i have a shimano castaic. but you have to use what is comfortable and affordable to you. i didnt fish with my 7.1 reel yet but i figure to take up more line and get them out of cover a high speed reel is a convienence Quote
HPBB Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I have 3 F/P rigs, what you are concidering sound ok. I would go with a H, not a MH. My set ups are 1. St. Croix Avid AC710H (7'10" heavy power, fast action) Team Daiwa-S 103HSDL 50# spiderwire, 25# Yozuri Hybrid leader 2. Gander Mountain Guide Series flippin stick 7'6" Heavy power Pinnacle Vision L Metal 40# Spiderwire stealth, 20# yozuri Hybrid leader I just picked up another St. Croix, same as above looking to get another TD-S 103HSDL , but think I'll try one of my TD Viento this year till I can find another 103HSDL I am right handed and throw all right handed reels, but started using left handed reels for F/P a few years go and love it. I like the idea of the burner reel 7.1 to 1, but I like the way the TD feels its a 6.2 to 1 The TD-S 103HSDL is set up a little different than most BC reels It just feels better to me for F/P. Quote
osmy22 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I am also in the market for a new Pitchin' & Flippin' rod to put on my Castaic. I think I am going to go with the St. Croix Avid Series Casting model AC703MHF. I've had the longer 7'6" Heavy action rods out there and I find those awkward and insensitive. I pitch more than I flip anyway. Thats my take. Good Luck! Quote
justfishin Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 There are a lot of good rods out there for pitchin and flippin. Personally I use a Team All Star 6' 10" MH. I use this rod and 20lb test on a Abu Garcia C3. It works great. Quote
Deuceu72 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 IMO, I dont think a "burner" reel is good for flippin/pitchin...........I try not to use a reel with a ratio above about 5.4 to 1........The slower reel has more torque to it so you can horse the fish out of cover better..........Just my .02........ ;D Quote
Super User Alpster Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 If you can afford it.....G-Loomis 7' 6" FS904IMX 'Flippin Stick' any good smooth (Shimano) reel with some horsepower will work for this technique. JMHO Ronnie Quote

osmy22 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Hey Bugman. Is the St Croix 7'3" really the deal? I am almost convinced. It sounds like it is very versatile. Although, my rods are very specialized. I can used a deep water C-Rig rod too. The pitching is really the intended usage. there are a lot of long, awkward choices out there. :-/ Quote
SCarter Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 I use a GLoomis MBR844C 7' H saddled with a Pflueger Supreme and 20# P-Line Halo. All the power i need. Quote
