Siebert Outdoors Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 i'm using a TDX and a 6'6" med imx for jerkbaits. With my recent accedent I need to change line. Just wondering if anyone has thrown this line for jerkbaits. I typically use 10lb flouro but I dont know if my line will be here by the weekend. With RW talking alot about the lb break point of this it might work better then regular 10 flouro. Any thoughts? Quote
wvubassfan Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 This will be the first year for me to switch. I went to all 4 and 6# line. I do mostly smallie fishing so all I have used is the 4# so far. I love it. It was strong enough to bring in a 12# striper. Just have to play the fish. Quote
The_Natural Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 That's a pretty thick line for jerkbaits. I've been using 8lb CarbonPro for two season now, and haven't broken off a fish yet. With a good knot that is retied frequently and your drag set properly, you should be fine with 10lb fluoro. Your bait will run a foot or two deeper as well. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 5, 2007 Super User Posted March 5, 2007 Here are my thoughts and it might surprise you, they are NOT all positive. For baitcasters: #8 is too small. Not so much because of strength (13 lb test), but because kinks SIGNIFICANTLY weaken the line. Now GMAN, you may not know what a backlash is, so this wouldn't apply to you. : I fish #12 Ultra Soft on all baitcasters, including the ones I use with jerkbaits. For spinning tackle: I currently have one reel (Sustain 2500) spooled up with original Hybrid to fish small jerkbaits (X-Rap 08) at Lake Fork. Original #8 tends to jump off the spool, so I have the reel under-filled about 1/4". Generally, as you know, I spool #6 Ultra Soft on spinning equipment and that is what I would recommend. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 Main reason for asking is I have some left over from my spinning reel. Works fine for that, just got to pay attention or its not going to be pretty. Taking Naturals post and RW's post and putting + and - together this is what I was thinking. 8lb yo zuri is kinda thick but it shouls be close to 10 I would think in diameter. The 13lb break point would be nice because where I'm going to be is woody, real woody. But I cant go up in lb line or I will lose depth. Major perdicument here. I might have to just give it a whirl and take an extra reel. BTW Roadwarrior Now GMAN, you may not know what a backlash is, so this wouldn't apply to you. That is what got me into this perdicument. I'm about to get rid of all of my rogues because of this. A little wind plus rogue= backlash. Those xraps cast into the wind soooo much better. Same with LC, guess I will have to break down and buy couple on sale.I've tried the spinning reel for jerkbaits before. To take words from Muddy. I look like a MOOK out there fishing with 2 left hands. Quote
TournyFish001 Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 I use 8lb carbon pro flouro on my baitcaster for jerkbaits with no problems... I think it is much more comfortable to jerk with a baitcaster than a spinning rig- just my .02- Quote
lubina Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 8 lbs for LM fishing in a BC?????, not around here. I use CX 12 lbs for most of my jerking needs, in a few spots that the fish I think will be deeper I switch to 12 lbs Halo. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Just an update. I tried the 8lb yozuri on my jerkbait rod. Worked great. no backlashes or break offs. Give it 2 thumbs up Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 12, 2007 Super User Posted March 12, 2007 Great! Did you catch any fish? Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted March 12, 2007 Author Posted March 12, 2007 Well, you cursed me on the no backlash post. ;D 1st cast of the day. Blamo Jig rod reel gonners. I had a CA condor nest in the thing. Not a little birds nest. I caught one dink 12" long off a 1/2oz blk blue jig with rattles and a 2" blue chart trailer. Its ugly but works good. I threw everything even the kitchen sink at them. I did find 51 deg water and that is where the dink came from. 2 fish were weighed in first place a 4lber took first and big bass second was a 3lber. First trip 0 fish Second 1 fish Third Predicting 2 fish LOL Quote
SCarter Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I have 10# Yo Zuri Ultra Soft on a Chronarch 50Mg that i throw jerkbaits with and it works great. Now I am thinking to go down to 8# Quote
Super User burleytog Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 #6 Ultra Soft is 0.011 in diameter, which is the same as 10 lb. test Trilene XL. I run 10 lb. Trilene on a couple of casting reels and haven't had any trouble. Quote
Bud Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I have used #6 and #8 on BC equipment with no problem. Just watch casting into the wind. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 #6 = .010" diameter #8 = .011" diameter Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 RW, Do you use Reel Magic or the KVD line cond. on your lines? I was told that it takes that white film off your line that they put on at the factory, and that it makes your line more soft and less memory? Someone told me that they spray it into a rag when putting the line on there reels. Dan Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 Actually, last year someone here had free KVD samples which I used. I really like the KVD, maybe better than Reel Magic, but I went through the sample and still have some RM left, so that's what I'm using. However, I think it was The-Natural that pointed out that these products are basically silicone spray which you can get anywhere for a couple of bucks. I'm going to give a generic a try and see if I like it. Quote
zachvii Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 This year I am going to try 10lb carbon pro and see how that works. Quote
Bud Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I think I will stick with my old Sunline Defier. If it not broke do't fix it. Quote
