Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 9, 2007 Super User Posted March 9, 2007 I've been mulling over the idea of getting a St. Croix Avid AS63MXF spinning rod to throw 1/8 to 1/4 oz. spinner baits . Any pro's or con's about this idea would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 9, 2007 Super User Posted March 9, 2007 I have an Avid AS60MLF and I use it for all my light weight/finesse fishing. I fish a lot of 1/8 oz. spinner baits. So far this rod has been a lot of fun. I have caught several crapie and bass. I thought the length of the rod might be to short but it has been perfect for casting accuracy and tight places. Quote
sal669 Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 I think it's OVERKILL. You don't need a high end rod to fish spinnerbaits. Any decent quality rod will do. starting at about 1/3 the price of the Avid. But, watever makes you happy... Quote

That rod would also be perfect for finesse worming, Hula Grubs, topwaters, etc., I don't want to start an argument, but the Avid is not a 'high end' rod, it's in the middle of the St. Croix lineup. Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 10, 2007 Author Super User Posted March 10, 2007 I agree Hot n Tot , it definately is a mid range rod. The high end version is 300.00 Thanks for the input guys. Quote
justfishin Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 For me only, I could never go a spinning rod and spinnerbait. Even if they are light 1/8-1/4. Without going into a brand war, I would say go with a 6' 6" baitcasting rod rated for 8-17 lb test and a 100 series baitcasting reel. Use 8-10 lb line on this setup. JMO. Good luck. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 10, 2007 Author Super User Posted March 10, 2007 Bait casters are tabo for me!!!!!!!! Quote
justfishin Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 OK Bassbrat, I have to ask you. Why are baitcasters taboo? Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted March 11, 2007 Author Super User Posted March 11, 2007 Personal prefrence that's all. Most like bait casters. Some like spinning reels. I'm in the some group. Quote
