justfishin Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I am sitting here at work and was taking a break looking into a couple of new reels. I like AG and saw that there were a couple of different models for the Revo. Any of you gentleman had any experiance with them and which one seems to be the best ? Thanks. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted March 6, 2007 Super User Posted March 6, 2007 All are best i have 3 STX,s and 2 S,s check out these prices ............http://www.deloscustomtackleshack.com/reels/abugarcia.html Quote
cowie Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I have the "black" model of REVO. I think that the "black" model is havyer than the "white" that is the top model about revo. I use the "black" for pitcing and flipping and I think that is a good reel expecially for quality and price!!! Quote
Bluecraw Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I purchased one Revo S and one Revo SX around Christmas. I took back the Revo S and purchased 4 more of the Revo SX. So, my main baitcasting setup consists of 5 Revo SXs when I hit the water. They all feel pretty much the same, even though the SX and STX have more bearings than the S. But the SX and STX have an external adjustment for the braking system, which I think is worth the extra $50. I was on the lake last weekend and by the afternoon the wind had kicked up to 20 mph or so. All I had to do was turn the braking adjustment a few clicks more and casting into the wind was no problem. With the S you would have to take the side cover off. In my opinion, the STX doesn't have enough extra features to justify the extra $50 over the SX. So, if you want to spend $100, go for the S....if you have the extra $$$, go for the SX. In my case, the STX didn't justify spending a total of $250 more over the SX and $500 more over the S. Hope this helps. I love these reels. I don't think you can get a better reel for the price.....but, the Shimano guys will say you can........ ;D Quote
Super User 5bass Posted March 6, 2007 Super User Posted March 6, 2007 I own 8 Revo's now. 3-STX...2-SX...3-S I really cant decide which one is the best deal because I dont think you can go wrong with any of them really....it basically all depends on how much money you have to spend and how many reels you need. I have enough confidence in my S models to fish them just as hard and just as often as the SX's and STX's I have. In my opinion, whichever model you choose wont be a bad choice. Quote
Super User Root beer Posted March 6, 2007 Super User Posted March 6, 2007 I love my SX. I want more! ;D ;D Quote
bugman Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I have looked at the Revo reels and think they are great reels. I wanted a 7:1 ratio reel so I was going to buy the SX. I had the salesman put it on a rod for me so that I could see how it felt in my hand. I have large hands and I could not grip the reel with my left hand without my thumb getting in the way of the line guide. I need a reel the size of a Curado 200 because of my hand size. I always suggest getting your hands on any reel or rod befor you buy one, I'm glad I did with the Revo. If the Revo feels good to you I would not hesitate to buy it. Quote
Pond Hopper Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 There was someone that posted a place on here to get the Revo S for $90 but I cannot seem to find the thread and need to get my hands on one. Otherwise I will just end up paying full price but a deal is easier for me to handle mentally. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted March 7, 2007 Super User Posted March 7, 2007 I have 2 STX and I love them... Just hoping AG comes out with a 7:1 lefty version Quote

huskertko Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I have a SX and I am having a very hard time getting used to it. Up till now I have used primarily Curados and the SX is so much different in my opinion. I absolutely love it but I have a question for the Revo users. I have to have the cast control knob tightened down as tight as it will go and the mag brake set to 8 or 9 otherwise I am constantly getting backlashes. I very rarely get them with my Curados, so is this me or is this reel that much more free spool than the older curados, that it is just going to take time to get used to it? Before anyone asks, it is mounted on a Loomis MBR 843 IMX rod, trying to cast a 3/8 oz jig with trailer. Now even with the cast control tightened down as far as it goes, I can still pitch that jig 30 feet without much effort, but casting it is almost an instant backlash at the beginning of the cast. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong Quote
jagdbdg Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Im having a hard time getting used to the revo sx as well. My Curado Ds no problem , then i pick up the Revo SX and its a mess. Quote

Several members of the Posse have bought them, too. Both the Revo and the Steez are "The New Thing." We'll see what everyone has to say down the road. I hope these reels turn out to be just as fine tomorrow as they are today, and I suspect they will be. Congratulations guys! Quote
Super User 5bass Posted March 7, 2007 Super User Posted March 7, 2007 I have all my brakes set at just under half and have no problems from the STX or the SX,unless of course I smack my lure against the trolling motor while casting.....then we have issues. I cant speak on the new Curado's....havent used one. I did use the old green ones for a little while and the Revo's do seem to be a little more "free". I think once you practice with it, it will come around for you. Quote
justfishin Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Thanks loads for the info guys. It sounds like a unanimous yes on these reels. Do I really need a new reel or two? No. Will I buy them anyway? Why certainly, lol. Quote

Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong Seeing as that you're not new to baitcasting reels and you know what you're doing, it sounds like you might have a bad reel. Your spool tensioning knob may not be doing its job. Try taking all of the line off the reel and keep your tensioning knob tight (like you said). When you press the thumb bar (being sure not to touch the spool), does the spool spin backwards? Or move at all? Because with that tensioning knob tight, it shouldn't spin at all. If it does, you have a bad reel. That spool shouldn't free spin with the tension knob turned only a few clicks, let alone all the way tight. Quote
KYbass1276 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 If it helps any I don't have one but while I was at BPS this weekend the revo was the only reel sold out. Not even one left in the display case. That has to say something Quote
senko_77 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I'm about just about to pick up a few stx's and a few sx's. I dont own one, but I have thrown them and there incredible. The S is nice, the only thing thats making me want the STX is that it has the free floating spool. I'm glad the Revo is selling so well for Abu. The C series is such an awesome line, but there just not what the crowd buys now. They needed the facelift. Quote

Ya i know what ya mean i have 15 c3,s ill never get rid of um im thinking the revo will cannibilize the c,3 and c4, 4600,s and another note im truley thinking the revo is the new c-3 in terms of history a turning point in abu history even ...im just wondering will they sell as many revos as they have sold c-3,s the worlds most popular reel and the most sold reel of all time???? Super User .ghoti. Posted March 8, 2007 Super User Posted March 8, 2007 Quote "Do I really need a new reel or two? No. Will I buy them anyway? Why certainly, lol. " That's the spirit, Jim. I'm with you all the way. I really have more reels than I need, but I know I'll be buying more. Why? Because, that's why. I'm of that bass-ackwards school that spends more on the reel than on the rod. I know it makes more sense to put the most into the rod, but I just can't do it. A big part of the fun for me is using a super smooth reel. Can't explain it, I just get a kick out of it. What's so cool is how reels just keep getting better and better. Some of the current crop are simply miniature mechanical marvels. ( alliteration anybody? ) I had both the SX and STX in my hands at BPS, and they feel as good as anything out there. I'd like to get one out on the water for a try out. I know if I look at one long enough, I'll probably talk myself into it. I know, no self control. So what, I work two jobs, and I can spend my money how I want to. AG has an excellent reputation for reliablity. It's hard to see how they could screw up the manufacturing process bad enough to make a poor reel, when they obviously put a considerable amout of engineering time into this new line. Mechanically and aesthetically, these new reels are a major step up from the old C3's and C4's. Time will tell if they can beat the sales and reliabilty of the old reels. I think they're off to a great start. I think I just talked myself into one. Cheers, GK Quote
Bass1 Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I have the Revo S and have absolutely no regrets!!!! Quote
