Buying Rods from Digitaka

Just learned from this forum that you can order from sites like Digitaka at much better prices than any US store. My question is how do you make sure you are buying the correct piece of equipment? The model numbers don't seem to match with the Shimano website or Tackle Warehouse. I'm wanting to get either an Expride B or Poison Adrena in a 7'2" MHF for jigs and plastics. I have found models that I think might be close to what I'm looking for, but just want to be sure when spending this much money.

The model numbers, for the most part, won’t match.

 

However, digitaka is a reliable JDM site. Their descriptions are typically very accurate and a good way to judge what you need to buy for your application.

 

I have bought a lot of poison, p5, and steez lined rods from Japan lure shop and digitaka over the years. I have pretty much always gotten exactly what I was shopping for.

 

The only other thing I would add is that a lot of JDM rod models are 2-piece and you have to put them together.

 

I am one that does not mind 2-piece rods and cannot tell a difference between 1- and 2-piece rods. A lot of US fisherman disagree with me though and only want 1-piece rods

I've ordered over a dozen rods from Amazon and never had to return one, yes surprisingly.

But can't overlook their return policy, stress free.

@PQuin when you look at what you like, under the price there's a link that says more info//official site.  You'll get the info needed to cross reference with US models.  My browser is set to automatically translate japanese.

ps - like @ReelDr says they are almost all 2 piece, break at the grip.  In the US market those usually get glued as one.  I think there is absolutely no difference

 

ppsss- actions/lengths are often different between markets and between where the joint breaks are.

If y'all don't keep your mouth shut about them JDM stores, then they ain't gonna last much longer for us. Get enough people ordering from Japan tackle stores and someone is gonna change the rules before you know it.

But the USDM market is such trash. If it’s not trash, it’s a massive ripoff.

Glad to hear you had good experience with Amazon. I personally have never ordered a rod from Amazon but have heard horror stories

JDM stores are only cheap because the Yen is in the tank.  It's down 25% over 5 years.  Add a third to the JDM price of what you're seeing and the prices are much more comparable.  For instance, Shimano SLX 70 (base model, nothing fancy) is $134 right now.  It would be $180 at the exchange rate before it started dropping in 2021.  TW has them for $150.  So it entirely depends on the exchange rate.

JDM shops will also sell below MSRP which helps to further drive down the price. You don't see that with major US retailers unless the item is on clearance.

Most JDM rod line ups are different than what is in US. Most Japanese anglers are fishing from the bank so the rods are shorter and the tapers may be a bit softer.  The biggest difference will be, no warranty on JDM rods. Good news is the price and Digitaka is a retailer you can trust.

That makes a lot of sense, I was having a tough time finding any rods over 7’. I ended up just ordering a Stradic reel because the shipping on the rod killed the savings compared to TW

Make sure they are sold AND shipped by Amazon. If so, you’ll be fine.

I do the opposite with Amazon orders - I want it drop-shipped from the original. Like my St Croix rods I've bought through Amazon...shipped from St Croix factory in WI.
