Yes it does. Honestly I think part of it is I fished in Florida for years and years. Every pond and lake I could find. Move to the Midwest. I’m catching bigger fish than I ever have so the excitement is there. And it got the best of me for sure.

You have a great attitude, as evidenced by your openness to all the advice. I bet you set a new PB this year and when you do, we'll all be so happy for you.

Thank you! And I love all the advice and conversation on here. Not many fishing friends. So you guys are lol. And you all are a wealth of knowledge. Hopefully we can all break our pb this year!

Don't put that kind of pressure on Tom (@WRB), who'd have to catch a 20-pounder, or @king fisher, who'd have to catch a 15-pounder! 😉

Ha! Then there's @GreenPig, who'd have to catch a 15-pounder, @Catt, who'd have to catch a 14-pounder, and @Pat Brown and @A-Jay, who'd have to catch 13-pounders, and more. Yeah, there are some big sticks at Bass Resource.

Lots of years and years of knowledge and experience. And everyone is so helpful. I’ve been on here a long time off and on. And even when I post stuff that probably seems dumb to most I still get help. What I love the most is now it’s all Facebook groups. Which I’m in a bunch for bass fishing. But ya get everyone and anyone. I figure someone who still wants to be part of an online forum. Must take it pretty serious. And want to help.

The guys are so helpful, but beware of me, for I'm sneaky. I have noted that you're a diesel mechanic and I'm angling for you to install a lightly used Cummins engine in my canoe.

If you can configure a Cummins engine into my canoe, you're a heckuva diesel mechanic! However, if you do, I plan to then use my canoe to tow the only island to my end of the pond. I will, of course, troll while towing the island, as I like to keep a lure in the water.

Just keep pulling the bass with your rod, don’t stop and slide it on the bank

Tom

If it’s a double digit bass wouldn’t that break the rod? Also isn’t it bad for the fishes slime coat to slide it across rocks/dirt/grass?

It happens.. I’d probably sell all my tackle and play video games 🤣🤣

jk.. yea get back to it, if there’s one then there’s a few more 4-6 pounders in there..

I never grab the line if I can avoid it. @Glenn does have a way he grabs the line that works but I believe he wraps it around his hand one time before lifting

Yep, I always grab my line.

That’s my new plan honestly lol. If I think it’s anything close to new pb.

To be fair, I lip anything that's over 5lbs.  Moreso because I don't want the hook to pull out, not because I fear the line breaking.

A few years ago I lost an easy PB smallmouth on a breakoff, an arm's reach away.

Sitting there, slack-jawed, a crushing realization came over me that the last time I remembered really checking the line and re-tying had been 7 or 8 fish ago.

I fight a big bass until it is tired, slowly reach down and grab it by the lip.  I have witnessed far to many fish of many species get away at the boat, or shore, simply because an angler gets in a hurry to land the fish.  The line snaps, hook pulls, bumped off with the net, missed with a gaff etc.  If it hasn't got off during the first part of the fight, it most likely wont get off at the end, as long as you don't horse the fish.  Any fish will most likely go on at least one last desperation run when it gets close to the boat or bank.  Be prepared to bow the rod to the fish, and don't have the drag cranked tight.  That last desperation effort wont last long, the run wont take out miles line, but it will be intense,  with every bit of strength the fish has.  Being close with very little line out and no room to give way for any mistakes.  Just take it easy, the bass is almost yours, don't get in a hurry, and get a good picture of your new PB.

This right here is the best way to land any bass over 2 pounds from the shore, anything smaller I’ll just flip in the air. Over the 2 pound mark I’m probably getting mid shin and going to lip it if it’s 5+ or get it under the belly in that 2-5 pound range.

I don’t like dragging them on the bank since I’ve heard it can cause them to get infections, but if it’s on a rattle trap I will probably drag them rather than sticking my hand in its mouth.

Been there done that, but not since joining the STRAIGHT BRAID BRIGADE. I lose some, but I don't break 'em off. 😉

If you're concerned about strength by diameter checkout Trilene XT

Noobie here. That sucks man, but thank you for posting this. There's a lot of good replies newer people like me can learn from. I didn't realize how detrimental grabbing the line could be.
